Just wanted to write something about how the romaces with them feel to me.

I recognize some patterns with me and that is a huge compliment to the character writing, because actually i think it shouldn`t be that way ;)

Leliana - i began to hate her. Comeon, one kiss and you are in love???  She is so naive and boring. Its cute in a way, but definetely NOT attractive. Clingy little thing and I didnt even get her laid yet.

The Morrigan romance was done sooo nicely. Actually, I really like this type of women, very self confident and homorous yet determined on the sexual side of things. And still this hard to get attitude followed by a sudden break-in, honestly something is triggered by this and i definetely have to think about the simplicity of my sexual conditioning now ;)

The jelaousy plot between the both is awesome. The ring as a gift from Morrigan is just hilarious and a great piece of writing. This one is sooo good, really. How she can`t deal herself with the sudden intensity of her emotions and tries to deal with it by blaming the main character for it, creating this "I don`t know what to say is the right thing..." for the player - thats great.

Actually I`ve never felt any game romance to be anywhere as realistic as those in Dragon age: Origins. Big, big compliment to those who wrote them.

...aaaand big compliment to Morrigans voice-acting. I love her voice, it makes my snake-senses tingle ;D. That one can be really sexy i have to admit ;) The voice-acting in general is superb. This game has one of the most elaborate and interesting character casts I have ever seen in a game. Thanks, Bioware.

*edit* blocked out that there is one to do with Zevran as well... Ehm yeah, great thing too, because manages to cause real emotions in me as well. I am like always trying NOT to hear the sexual undertone in his statements and always to answer as clear as possible to exclude any misunderstanding in this regard - it manages to create an authentic awkward feeling. I love it! (In a purely platonic way of course ;PP)

Just did a google search on the actress of Morrigan, Caudia Black, awesome choice indeed ;)

She's a **** and treats you like crap. She only cares about herself and her own personal goals. But if you like that kind of thing...

I think you're being unfair to Leliana, di55ection. What's wrong with falling in love after the first kiss? I mean, she travels with you, fights for you, spends days and nights with you. It would be natural for anyone to fall in love under such circumstances - even before the first kiss. There's nothing naive about that. If that's your personal preference, fine. But everyone has different tastes and I feel that calling her generally unattractive because of that is undeserved.
Call me clingy but I personally prefer the characters that actually care for you, fall deeply in love with you and while struggling with their feelings a bit, eventually also show it. That's why I like Alistair and Leliana. Then again, that's my personal preference.

I think that calling Morrigan names is pretty much uncalled for, however. Yes, she's not exactly your average goody two-shoes kind of person but I'd say she has plenty of reasons for that. While I often don't like her attitude - especially towards certain characters (e.g. Wynne) -, I can see why she thinks the way she does. Flemeth didn't exactly bring her up to be a gentle flower. Her whole life, she had been taught that only "Survival has meaning. Power has meaning." while her mother had been feeding her gruesome stories instead of fairy tales. And that still seems to be one of the nicer things Flemeth had done.
While I want to slap her from time to time and don't see myself romancing her anytime soon, she's much more than just some evil witch. The way she says: "While I may not always be worthy of your friendship..." simply breaks my heart everytime I hear it.

In my opinion, every love interest in the game is appealing in a way. It only depends on your/your Warden's tastes.

There is something quite interesting in the way you find both Leliana and Zevran nice but not attractive.
Have you tried to romance Alistair already  (if you play female wardens, of course)?

@ di55section: Also, remember that Leliana is a character with a history of physical and sexual abuse due to a betrayal of one she loved. This is not someone who will trust easily, or give her heart lightly. The very fact that she kisses you and confesses love should be taken as a compliment of the highest regard, not the sad-sap reactions of a starry-eyed virgin who clings to you because she has no other choice. I love both of the female LIs, as they are completely different yet both worthwhile.

Both Morrigan and Leliana share in common that they do not give their heart easily, but Leliana's physical reticence is an aspect of her character's past and upbringing, just as Morrigan's physical forthrightness and emotional difficulties are aspects of *hers*. Zevran, of course, uses innuendo to cover up the fact that his true intimacy can only be achieved once the physical is no longer the key aspect of the relationship. All are wonderful relationships, and I'd encourage you to look at them as totally different, not just write off Leliana as 'not as good as Morrigan because she's different'. :)

I have to say I responded rather differently than di55ection.

Morrigan seemed a bit too "survival of the fittest" for my taste. I can understand that she grew up in the wilds with only Flemeth as a role model, and likely formed a hard edge to her character because of the way she was treated by the other people she encountered. I thought she used sex in a manipulative way, particularly in the Dark Ritual: "I want your baby, but you will never see it." Not my type of relationship, I'm afraid.

Leliana was more my type, although I still think that the Leliana romance should have been with Alistair. They were two of a kind. I've already given an opinion about rose symbolism in the context of Leliana's character elsewhere, so I won't bore you with it again. I will say again that I think Leliana was a complex character, and she struggled with moral and religious questions in a deeply personal way. I liked that about her.

They are both interesting characters, I suppose. Each in her own way.

Hello gandanlin! Would you mind linking your post about the rose symbolism for those of us who are somewhat new to the vast and scary universe of BSN? If that isn't a problem, that is. I would be interested in reading it.

No, it couldn't. Can you imagine the outrage from both Alistair and Leliana fans?
But I guess you have a point. They're both the sweet and caring types and are looking for a loving, long-lasting relationship. I guess they are somewhat compatible and had not the Warden been there, it would have made perfect sense. However, with the Warden in the play, the poor things have to work with what they get.
But to be honest, Leliana is one of the best friends of my favourite Warden. Please, don't make me want to... strangle her. :pinched:

@ Vanilka of the Sword Coast:

I spent the last 30 minutes trying to track down that post, with no luck.  I think it was quite a while back that I wrote that, and I'm not even sure the exact topic to which it was written as a response.

All I recall for certain was that I referenced the following in the context of Leliana's visions of the rose:

Sorry.

I'll keep looking around for it.

Oh my, don't worry about it, gandanlin. I don't want you to waste your time because of me. It seems I have already taken too much as it is. Maybe I'll stumble upon it now that I know what to look for.

Thank you for the link though. It makes an interesting read and has given me something to ponder. I must admit I didn't give it much thought before.

@caradoc2000
So, it's true? I thought people here were just joking. Interesting. But I can see how that could happen. Especially with the (female) Warden out of the way.

I found Leliana much more attractive after her Hardening and she stops shoving religious stuff down my throat.

I do always end up with Morrigan, she's just more... Sexy and dangerous.
(and yes, I do realize she's a selfish b**ch)

I enjoy both, but for different reasons. And I tend to romance Leli with my female wardens while my male wardens go with Morrigan. Just seems right that way for some reason.

As for the first kiss being love... it takes some talking and, in the game world, some time for that to happen as someone noted. So it isn't a first meeting, few days, kiss... swoon. It's time and effort and actual bonding. Also, as that same poster noted... Leliana was not only manipulated, but more than likely she was also raped when taken prisoner. So a kiss would be a very huge deal... especially since we can pretty much know that was the first sign of real affection since that betrayal. So it isn't something that is as light and silly as you seem to think.

Personally, I would get sick to my stomach everytime Leliana spouted off with something about the "Maker".  blah blah Maker blah blah... blah blah Andraste blah blah.  I think quoting Morrigan in this instance perfectly sums my thoughts on the religious context within the game.

"Even in the very bowels of the earth, we hear no end to this Chant." -Morrigan (in Orzammar)

As somone who tended to use Wynne,Alistair and leiliana in my party I found her to be hardly preachy at all infact she barely brought it up unless I talked to her about it. unlike Anders in DA2 who never shuts up about mages when you talk to him or in party banter<_< then again I despise Morrigan so I may be biased.:bandit:

Leliana's song DLC made me love Leiliana ever more. Making her harden doesn't make her drop her religious beliefs but she embraces her bard aspect far more easily which makes her lots of fun. Especially with Isabela.
