I see that name sometimes in these posts.  From context, it sounds like the name given to the very last enemy in the game, during Citadel: The Return.

What's so special about that guy, and why does he have that name?

The very last shootable enemy (except Catalyst in EC) in ME3 is a Marauder. Shields is added humouristically as a surname because of the shields bar beneath it's name.

He is famous because fans lovingly remember him as the one who tried to save you from the generally unliked endings by shooting you dead O_O

Is this trolling?

If you are serious, I highly suggest looking him up on these forums and such. The one good thing about the ME3 ending is it motivated me to look at the original backlash and all the cool thoughts/posts/things made out of it - I wish I had been there at the time, honestly.

Look here for the basic stuff:
http://knowyourmeme....arauder-shields

and this:

There was no end boss for ME3; people joke that he was the boss instead and tried to save us from the terrible ending (there are three husks, then a Marauder, with shields - look at the video). It's apparently a...4chan thing, originally? I'd need fans to check that one.

He was the final boss, /v/.

But you just don’t understand how series this was.

This isn’t just some random Marauder that popped out of nowhere, this Marauder waited to fight you from the very beginning.

All this time, he waited for you, but he was just unable to fight you from countless delays and interruptions.

He knew you were comings back to earth, so he trained and trained to get his chance to kill you.

From games, Mass Effect 1 and 2, he was finally able to face you in the end of 3.

Even if he lost, he would at least know that you were his final opponent.

EDIT: Oh, shoot, can't believe I forgot!

There was a comic made as a result of this meme that was originally a joke, called Marauder Shields, that is now a serious alternate fan-ending story.  It's pretty awesome. :]

Yeah what Rhayak said. It started on 4chan, I believe. He is the last enemy you fight in the game that can actually kill you (in gameplay, not cutscenes).

He tried to save us from the ending. Though not enough credit is given to the 3 Huskateers.

Just the first major insult to BIO when the game came out...Pretty overrated now...just like the "Art" crap. The comics were awesome though....

He is the fan-nickname for the Marauder that attacks you as you're limping towards the telporter after being roasted by Harbinger.

Unless you played on Insanity. Then his name is "Rat Bastard".

Oh, believe me, it was NOT a fun time. Nonstop sh*tting from EVERY corner for at least a month straight. There were so many replies and new threads that the "recent activity" feed was showing the oldest posts as less than a minute old. It was...not a good time. BSN imploded, basically.

He's our hero ...

The hero Mass Effect deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
He's a silent guardian, a watchful protector, Marauder Shields.

Marauder Shields was Nihlus from ME1

I still like the thought that it might be Nihlus trying to help us from ME1. And never mind how he got there, with all the other plot holes in the story why worry about one more?

Oh come on, all these replies and only one person offers a link to the comic series? http://koobismo.devi...rt.com/gallery/ Anyway, yes, all of the above, but the 'joke' took a serious turn when Koobismo took the Good Marauder and turned it into an ending in its own right. Check it out, good reading! Recommend starting at #6, as the earliest ones were joke strips poking fun at some of the various plotholes, and introducing the very earliest incarnation of Marauder Shields. #6 is when the story starts.
