I mean the genetic structure of the turians and quarians already set them apart in the culinary world. They eat anything intended for letro-amino lifeforms, and at best they get no nutritional value whatsoever. At worst, they suffer extreme allergic reactions.

Humans, asari, salarians, and most others are letro-amino (aka amino-sinister).
Turians and quarians are dextro-amino (aka amino-dextrous).

But in ME2, EDI ovberves the collector data as having a unique genetic structure - rather than the double helix a human would have, it has a triple(!) helix with waaaay more bonds. She then says "only one other species is known to have this structure:
....PROOOOTHEAAAANS."

Thats even more different from the other races than the amino acids are!

How could Javik's body possibly produce whatever enzymes would be required to break down the materials in whatever food is available? Does Shepard have to command soliders to scour backwater planets for plants that may still use a compatible structure?
:wizard:Or does Javik just eat Space Magic, which is not nutirionally viable for a soldier in battle? He'd need to eat a loooot of Space Magic to justify not starving, and would probably need a wizard-lick to get the minerals he needs.

He eats your feeeelings /jk

Well there is the mention of salarian livers being a delicacy in his cycle so...I guess he can eat levo-amino food.

The levo-dextro thing is complete nonsense, by the way. A levo organism can eat and derive nutrients from dextro food just fine and vice versa, they just has to work a little harder to digest it, which may or may not result in mild stomach aches.

...whereas a dextro organism cannot do the same? I guess that makes sense... though I don't know much about enzymes, letro/sinister implies they need/use the left chain, dextro implies they need/use both. A letro may be able to break the left chain from the right, but a dextro cannot add a right chain to a sole left?

But in that case, Prothean DNA is still more complex than letro or dextro, with more chains. Wouldn't it require more chains...?

Or maybe I'm just talking out of my ass at this point. Emeraldfern mentioned salarian liver, and that does sound familiar (he says it n Sur'Kesh I think), though I still don't see how that works with the biology...

I guess one could just say Bioware retconned Prothean BNA like the retconned dark enemy cycles. Look down, look up! The Protheans are now letro.

He says it on Sur'Kesh if you talk to Wrex.

But Arcian's technically right; from a Bio-chemist's view the Levo/Dextro thing doesn't make sense in the first place. That said, I'm no expert on bio-chemistry so I can't explain why it doesn't make sense. I do know I've seen someone explain it somewhere...tumblr? Gn. My memory escapes me :/

Yes they can, I forgot to add a "and vice versa" to my post.

I think there's a bit of dialogue about what he eats, and he refuses to share that information lest he be poisoned.

...then he asks if it's true that Shepard keeps fish in his cabin.

We don't know what Javik eats. We only know what he does not eat: flies.

My guess is he eats Reapers.

This. Game heavily implies that he eats fish. That, or he was making another one of his subtle jokes.

This.

Also if he was seriously considering eating those fish, the Protheans must be levo based like humans and Asari. The fish come from Thessia, Earth and Khaje.

As for how he hydrates, it's obvious that he drinks the tears of his primitive squadmates.

I think you're confusing nucleic acid with amino acid. Proteins are made of amino acids. Genetic structure known as DNA is Deoxyribosenucleic Acid and is made up of nucleotides, not amino acids.

EDIT: "I hear you keep fish in your cabin, Commandah?"

Javik can eat whatever he feel like, but he generally prefers to eat whatever involves the most trolling. Thus his favorite thing to eat is the fish in Shepard's cabin.

So Mordin lied to me? Why would he do that?

Looks like my FemShep can ingest after all... :bandit:
