Hi everyone

I was just wondering what the general reaction to same sex romance being implemented in Mass Effect 3 was.

Did people make lots of threads about it? Was the overall reaction positive or negative? Was there any difference in reactions between the F/F options and the M/M options?

Thanks in advance ;)

Only idiots and trolls are against same sex relationships.
So whilst many people are fine and happy that bioware implmented them, there will always be a small vocal minority against them

Not....exactly what I asked, but thanks for your input all the same :P

EDIT: Ah, I see you edited your post ;)

Yes, while I am aware that there is a vocal minority who do not support them, i just wanted a sense of what was gong on during the whole Shep/Cortez video thing

Well, you can still argue about the "OOC" thing, but personally I don't care, more options for more players was nice.

Nearly every non-homophobe liked them because they were generally well written. I didn't see any real-life homosexuals getting offended, which is all that really matters

It's basically what you expected, lots of threads about ruining established characters, blah blah. Bunch of positive and negative.

I realised just after I clicked post, so I've edited a bit.

Some people were annoyed that Kaiden became bisexual all of a sudden. And some complained about Cortez not being able to do his job because he was gay (I have no idea why).

While the Kaidan thing may be a valid complaint, that Cortez comment makes it obvious that a few of them are just homophobic trolls

Let's not forget that "became bisexual all of a sudden" is from a meta-gaming perspective only.

I've had such relationships since ME1, so meh?

Yes Liara does count whether you like it or not.

Why does she have a thin beard along the sides of her face.

Also,

STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVE!

I'm okay.

You sure?

There's one issue I have with STEEEVE and it has nothing to do with being gay.

He loses his husband, has a really hard time getting over it, then can get into a relationship with ManShep and promptly loses him too.
Some people are just cursed, man.

They say past experiences bias your perception...  ;)

He has that whole 'dying from not being spoken to enough' thing going for him too. It's pretty weird, but it started in 2.

I liked new same-sex characters introduced in ME3 because they felt natural and didn't feel pushed to you. Disliked the whole Kaidan situation. I mean, why they didn't "convert" Ash to lesbian as well then?

I remember a few threads, the OP was usually ridiculed quite heavily for being a bigot. My favorite one was when the guy was just confused and shocked by the idea of having a gay crew member/friend.
Something along the lines of:
"I was talking to Steve and he was cool and all, but then he was all like, I lost my husband. I was all WTF and didn't talk to him again. I don't hate gay people but, seriously why's this guy on the crew?"

Oh of course she does, in fact i plan on making a thread later about why people are seemingly okay with F/F relationships but not with M/M

But it's gunna take a lot of work so i don't be too offensive ;)

This is more a general reaction to how they were placed in ME3 really

I KNOW RIGHT?!

Ashley was totally a case of "huh. I had never looked at it this way". You expanded her horizons in terms of politics in ME1... I was looking forward to expanding them further in all sorts of senses :o

I'm just going to go ahead  and blame machismo.

I think it was because then femshep would have 5 lesbian options and 2 straight, which is even further from what is the case with man shep, who, IIRC, had 9 straight and 2 gay

To be fair, that image of Traynor does have a very thick outline.

As for the OP: I saw some pretty unpleasant trolling, but nothing unexpected. I guess it depends on what you're used to, though.
I myself was happy with how they (Bioware) dealt with things, and I agree with TAO regarding Liara counting, but am glad they gave the guys someone (well, two choices) as well.
I guess Bioware took an easy route with Liara in many ways, what with the Asari only having one gender to begin with. Well, that and the fact she was a cute-looking human woman with blue skin and strange head thingies. I can never get enough of head thingies.

I will cover that in my essay.

I hope to try and discuss the actual place of F/F and M/M relationships in society while using mass effect, as a series, as a kind of 'case study'

It does annoy me that broshep has three more romances than femshep, after the numbers being identical in 1 and 2, whether straight or not.
