I know this is not an appropiate forum to ask, I posted at Mass Effect 2 forum as well but that forum seems semi obselete, just trying to get my chances up here.

I recently bought Mass 1,2,3 all together, finished 1 and playing the 2 but having an annoying problem.
I tried many things but still unable to get 5.1 surround sound from Mass Effect 1 and 2 ,I tested Mass Effect 3 is fine, I got full 5.1 surround sound from Mass Effect 3.
I am using Gigabye P67A-UD5-B3 motherboard's onboard realtek sound card and use the optical link to connect my PC to my home theater amplifier(support all 5.1 format, including Dolby TrueHD)

I can get 5.1 surround sound in ANY game I've bought that are supporting 5.1, including Mass Effect 3.
I see Mass Effect 1 and 2 are both supporting 5.1 but how can I enable 5.1 for my PC? is there any way I can do that? Thanks

I don't have an answer per-se but I would check the following:

1. Check your on-board audio settings to ensure that DD 5.1 is the default output. This would be done through the Realtek drivers/software.

2. Check that the appropriate sound option is selected within each game.

3. Ensure that your sound receiver is set to output DD 5.1.

thanks so much for the input

I already checked in "Sound" settting , the output format of my Realtek audio already set to DD live (5.1 Surround)

the sound receiver also receiving and decoding ALL materials in 5.1 , all except ME1 and ME2.

So I pretty positive that my setup have no problems, I expect it was ME1 and ME2's problem.

I actually googled A LOT before posting in this forum, many people reporting simliar problem and after countless read of the threads and replies, still can't find a single solution that works.

out of desperation , so I came here for help :(, really really want to enjoy Mass Effect series in 5.1 as the game sound is soooo incredible. one of the best sound design in gaming history.

afaik ME2 and ME1 have no on-the-fly Dolby Encoding which is needed for the optical or coaxial digital outputs as both don't have the bandwidth to transport uncompressed 5.1 sound. So the decoding has to be done by the soundcard and not your amplifier.

Thus, you will have to use the 5.1 analogue outputs of your mainboard, configure them in the Realtek Sound Manager and connect them to your amplifier's 5.1 external input in order to get 5.1 sound. At least this works for me in ME1 and 2 although ME1 doesn't have that good positional audio as ME2 and 3.

I had sound issues with ME1 back in the day. I have found this text file I had saved on my external HDD with all my ME backup saves, I hope it helps! I know it worked for me, but I havent a clue why in the text file there are 2 different sets of text you can use (or which one worked for me)
P.S. I use Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2

this make sense, Thanks man.
my amplifer doesn't have analog 5.1 input, so I guess I am stuck with stereo for ME 2 lol

Too bad - next to a 5.1 headset that normally has it's own soundcard, I don't know any other alternative sadly.
