I've just finished my second playthrough with a two-weapon fighting based rogue. My final armor combination was:

Helm of Hornleath, Cadash Stompers, Shadows of the Empire & Ancient Elven gloves.

I found that this combination, along with the rings/amulet/belt I equipped gave me a better combination of stats than any matching armor set could provide.

As far as matching sets go; there are basically three excellent massive armors: Juggernaut Plate, Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate & Blood Dragon Armor...however I also like the Armor of Diligence

...however for the most part, the set bonusses don't provide enough when compared against a well paired unmatching set.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this matter or non-matching armor combos they have found that work well?

The Warden Commander's Armor set does wonders for the Rogue. BUT the big caveat is that it's massive armor on a Rogue. Not many people do that.

But IMO, the overall set bonus + individual enhancements provide the most utility for a damage oriented, crit-oriented, activated talent reliant character.

With Rogues and any non-AW Mage, obviously non-set armor will provide better bonuses. Personally, my favorite Rogue setup is Helm of Honnleath, Silverhammer's Tackmasters (or Cadash Stompers, I just like the reduced hostility AND Dex boost), Felon's Coat, and Red Jenny Seekers. The other Rogue just gets Wade's Superior Drakescale Armor.

As for good Warrior Armor sets...

Juggernaut Plate

Wade's Superior Dragonbone Plate

Blood Dragon Armor

Legion of the Dead Plate

Warden Commander Armor (Warden's Keep DLC)

Effort and Duty Set

Armor of Diligence

...Which is a lot to choose from. Then there's also the 100% Spell Resist combo for Templars.

I'm always confused as to what to equip my non-AW mages with, because no robes/cowls really stand out besides Robes of posession (which are Morrigan only) and Reaper's Vestments (which...don't really help anything that a Mage is looking for).

For Mages, Avernus' robes and Senior Enchanter's Robes are pretty much where it's at. They look pretty cool, too. I suppose some of the Tevinter robes are effective but personally I don't want walk around dressed as a bird. They look silly and plus, Shale might have another psychotic episode.

I personally prefer Warden Commander armour for my AW/BM. I'm going to go for the Silverite set in my next playthrough for looks and fatigue purposes. But it's a fine suit of armour and can't really be faulted. I ended up making a Silverite Warden Commander Helm in the toolset, and gave it some toned down Helm of Honnleath stats.

Key To The City, Lifegiver, Anduril's Blessing and The Spellward are pretty much the most powerful combo of items in the game.

I have to agree with the OP: if you've got the right pieces, a set made of unique armor pieces is going to serve you a lot better than a matched set with a set bonus. After all, no armor set gives the +15% Critical/Backstab Damage that you get from the Red Jenny Seekers, as an example.

With my rogue run last time, I had a massive 32.5% chance of critical hit with both off hand and main hand weapons. I mean, make cone of cold, get in the center and use ability whirlwind. Most of the people will get instantly shattered. It's just overpowered! And I basically had that equipment, although I switched the gloves with the ones from Jarvia, +5% chance of crit hit.

Actually, the Warden Commander armour gives you exactly that. Plus more stuff, like +armour and physical resistance bonuses on the chest alone.

The best for warriors/STR rogues is probably the Evon the Great's Mail + Wade's Superior Plate Boots and Gloves. For some odd reason, it counts as a set. It gives 27 armor and does not have any fatigue penalty. Plus given Health and Stamina regen, 10% evasion and chance to dodge missile attacks. Combined with Key To The City, Lifegiver, Anduril's Blessing and The Spellward, it is rather hard to die in a fight.

The Diligence set in underrated. It provides the same amount of armor as the Juggernaut and Effort sets, and has much less fatigue penalty, and gives defense and stamina bonuses.

Warden Commander Armor chest piece is beaten out by The Felon's Coat. More Physical Res, more Stamina Regen, and a massive boost to Dexterity... The only thing the Warden Commander armor does better is give more Armor.

That's why I wear armour. Because I want armour points. :P

And the 15% damage boost to critcals. Combine that with my customised Crow Dagger and that's a fair extra wedge of damage.

Besides, the price of the Felon's Coat is so high that it would take even longer to get all the Lifegiver/Anduril's Blessing/Staff of the Magister Lords/Spellward cheesery.

I wear armor to increase my damage output. Having Master Stealth means I don't need to worry about armor.

Also, I'm on the 360, so I can't customize jack sh*t.

Felon's Coat costs way to much money. No point in getting it, never have never will. Same as the dagger you can buy in Orzammar Rose Thorn Dagger I think it is.

Not enough gold in the game to obtain these items. Unless you cheat.

Agh, too bad. It's nice being able to just make stuff down to your own specifications.

I think that depends on what you use your gold for. I was able to afford all the Superior Dragon stuff, and all the cheesy items I mentioned - though I think I finished the game with about 5 gold to spare :D

Actually, there is enough money in the game to get them without cheating. It just requires work. All you do is get a character to Master Herbalism, then make Potent Lyrium Potions. If you buy the materials from the Gnawed Noble Tavern and the Circle Tower, you'll actually make a profit when you sell them. If you're a Dwarven Noble, you'll make even more money by selling to Gorim in the Denerim Market District.

There's also the quest 'Precious Metals', which you can walk out of with 98 gold (for a 58 gold profit). It's not easy to get the money for the items, but it's not impossible, either.

...well I completed my playthrough with a total of 1100 sovereigns spent (after selling everything post-epilogue to see how much I could get LOL)...

...must have missed out on Felon's Coat as it wasn't in the store before I got Wade to make me the Dragonscale armor!

...there's something I don't really like about wearing heavy/massive armor on a Rogue...must be D&D tendancies, I just see an armor check penalty!

...with all the stat boosting gear I had on, my final dexterity came to 96 so my damage with daggers was pretty reasonable, as such I didn't really see the need for Red Jenny's.

I think I find that the armor sets (with their set bonusses) work better for companions as with more careful item-choice you can select what works best for your hero, however it's mostly overkill for cannon fodder!

...with my mage I found the Reaper's Vestements to be the best, even though I had Arcane Warrior specialization for using heavier boots, gloves & helm. The first enchanters robe is also much better than the senior enchanter's robe! ...in fact, Reaper's are so good, I would have used them on my Rogue if they weren't mage only...!

You sound like you're more of a defensive player. I'm an offensive one, so for me, anything that increases my damage output is going to be great. For example, I think the Reaper's Vestments are a pointless waste of money, especially when compared to the Tevinter Mage Robes that are available in the same place for a mere 8 gold.

...yeah I guess defensive sounds right! ...my rogue ended the game with 170+ defense LOL...IMO you last a lot longer if you are harder to hit...sure taking less damage from blows is nice (armor)...and dealing more damage will certainly kill your enemies quicker...but if folkes can't hit you, then you aren't going to die! Increasing dexterity to absurd proportions also increases you attack & damage with daggers so most enemies dropped pretty quickly

...I still prefer the first enchanters robes to tevinter mages...but then you've already said I'm a defensive player!

You can certainly afford all the expensive buys in the game for your core 4, provided you pick every locked chest and sell every loot you don't need.

In anycase, matched sets usually are the best bang for the buck armors in the game, so you use them in the meantime until you can afford the more expensive uniques.

Only exception to this is the 2H warrior, where it is no question Wade's superior heavy or preferably medium is best for them assuming they're not the main tank. This is because these warriors heavily rely on activated abilities not much unlike the mage, so Wade's superior armor gives them +2 stamina regen but more importantly pretty much negates their fatigue or even puts it to negatives in the case of medium. This is so much more worth than the minor increase in dps they will gain through other armor, since there exists no stamina potions.

My level 21 rogue (who will be level 22 before she kills the archdemon, I think)

is wearing:

Felon's Coat

Longrunner's Cap

Cadesh Stompers

Gloves of Guile

Key to the city

Harvest Festival Ring

Shadow Belt

Reflection (the amulet my father gave me in the vision) - for sentimental reasons I won't replace.

Weapons: Topsider's Honor longsword

Rose's Thorn dagger.

Stats:

Strength 27 +4 = 31 (enough to wield Topsider's Honor)

Dexterity 50 + 16 = 66

Will 25 +2 = 27

Magic 13 +2 = 15

Cunning 37 +2 = 39

Cons 15 +4 = 19

Rose's Thorn gives you +30% critical Backstab damage.

Cadesh Stompers gives you 2% melee critical and 2% ranged critical

Shadow belt gives another 3% so a total of 35% critical chance.

Mental resistance check 26

Physical resistance 98

Fire, cold, electrical all 0% (use balms for that)

Nature 20%

Spirit 20% (will change this right before AD fight

Health 235

Stanima 175

Armor 22

Defense 130

Attack 119

Damage 33.1

Fat 12.6%

Has Rogue first line including Coup de gras

All of 2nd (including evasion)

all of 3rd (mechanical stuff)

1st 2 of Ranger pets

All of Duellist to pinpoint strike

Duel Weapon mastery

Whirlwind

Shattering shot (just added for a little extra archery)

Using Momentum and Duelling as persistent, plus getting telekenetic weapons from Morrigan, and using poisons, well...not much stands.

highest kill: Gaxkang.

Friendly fire damage 1180

Greatest damage only 157

but total damage 246,797

44% of party damage

hit rate 93%

Maybe not the most best, but the equipment makes a difference, and, well, awfully fun to play.

speaking of stealing... that guy with the black-market lyrium? You know how he gives you a "finder's fee" after? Steal it from him after he gives you the lyrium. When you get back, he still gives it to you !
