Focusing on the Krogan war effort seems the most likely option for getting Wrex back in the game. You can swap him with Wreav if he's dead, but advertising a Wrex-focused DLC doesn't work if the main character (Wrex) is dead or replaced, so we can't make it about him specifically.
In terms of narrative, the most likely scenario I'd figure would be the Krogans fighting Reapers. One option would be to visit different venues around the Galaxy as the Krogans offer their support - you could potentially be given a Krogan squadmate, or take control of a Krogan character. Alternatively, you could be given a mission that requires Shepard to assist the Krogans as they face down the Reapers - maybe they've re-done the Genophage themselves, or are creating new Krogan (or other alien) synthetic enemies. Maybe their relations with the other races.
Gameplay would need to stretch across a couple of hours, maybe three or four at most. The ME2 and DA2 DLCs were successful because the stories didn't drag on and the files weren't too large.

So long as the content isn't focused on a single squadmate, it's possible. DLC needs to be a self-contained story. That's not to say you can't include extra dialogue/banter/reflections of past decisions, but the more specific it is, the more difficult it is to incorporate every possible scenario.

I read your Citadel Run part. But Bioware probably won't do that now since we got the EC. Maybe at most we'll see some Krogan fighting as adding scenes.
But I posted this as an idea that maybe further elaborate? social.bioware.com/group/5020/discussion/23563/

This would be a expansion llike Dragon Age Origins Awakening that you would buy from a retailers. Not some small DLC. That whole thing isn't even finished, That's just the beginning of the addtions I have in mind whic would stand the entire game. Not just near the end.

My only real complaint with Wrex is that he wasn't a temp squaddie, but I feel his role in the narrative is quite fulfilling. If we're gonna get one of our old Krogan squaddies back, it should be Grunt. He's my baby.

I was replaying ME2 the other day, and man I wish we got more of Okeer.
yeah man. I too agree. I like Okeer. I think he would have been Interesting as a Squadmate. It's too bad he died...
But the crazy thing is, Okeer, has a long-hated history. I would like to see if Bioware would include more Okeer in Krogan History.

it's interesting, I wasn't a huge fan of Grunt in ME2 (mainly since i was piseed he was replaced by Wrex)
but ME3 Bioware did redeem Grunt status of awesomeness.
We really need Grunt & Wrex together. If possible even Zaeed in the bunch. These three really make a great team.
And for those who missed out on Wrex or Zaeed or had Grunt killed.................screw'em. They can play a new game with them saved

Grunt and Zaeed have no excuse for not joining Shepard's crew, especially Grunt who owes so much to shepard since he/she. Let's not forget Shep is grunt's battlemaster and "he/she has no match", so it just feels unnatural and weird that Grunt doesn't join Shepard to fight at his/her side one more time.
Zaeed is an ol' soldier who's been through a lot and he'd obviously be a valuable asset to Shep's crew so I think Shep should at least try to get a guy like him on board the normandy.
Then Wrex, he's the Krogan boss so he's got stuff to do. But why couldn't we get at least one mission with the guy? Like Anderson at the beginning (a little longer maybe, meh).
Raging Nug was talking about the possibility of a DLC that focuses on the Krogan war effort. That would seem like a great idea to get both Wrex and Grunt.
So even if Grunt did not join shep after the Rachni mission, he might do it after something like this happens: Shep is on Palaven's moon, he'd brought there the primarch because he had business there, Wrex is there too. They hear comm chatter about a Krogan unit on Palaven wich is in a very bad spot and that unit is Grunt's.The normandy is the only ship who has notbing to do and can get there in time and Wrex joins Shep to get Grunt out of trouble with an epic firefight on Palaven. After that Wrex gets back to his boss business and Grunt finally joins shep's team.
So in one epic DLC we get to fight at Wrex's side, have Grunt in our team and fight on Palaven with Krogans and Turians.

no. Wrex never did reveal how get got those Scars. I've always thought a Backstory to Wrex/Wreav be interesting. Krogan history is awesome IMO

hey man, I feel ya. ME3 lacked character development except on characters like liara ( who got the most attention )
but we can still get more Wrex. If fans show they want more.

gave a good suggestion in my inbox. He thought it be nice to see how Wrex/Wreav story that lead up to ME3 story. Like how did they contact Mordin/Padok
This can include how the Females go to Sur'Kesh. I like to see more female Krogans in ME3 Universe.

I would have loved to just have
been able to bring Wrex along with during the first part of the game
when you're doing all the missions to make the cure and stuff. Give him a
handful of dialogue lines and you get him as your bro through the first
arc of the game. He is already on the ship, why not have him as a
squadmate? Can't be because its too dangerous. Krogan love that stuff
and he's with Shepard, who is the main character and never has a
squadmate die while with him.
As far as an extra mission, what if
there some of the Krogan clans, or at least one, that were still "FU
Wrex we don't need you as a leader!" and then the reapers come along and
they beg for saving. Then you go down there, boot rape some reapers
with Wrex and then slap the clan leader around a bit for being an idiot
and not bending to Wrex's will.
Then do this again for Legion in
arc 2. Don't care about the people who let them die in earlier games.
They deserve to miss out on this.
some good ideas that can be elaborated.
I still think
Aleena & Wrex be the best
or Aria & Wrex

I'd be up for a Wrex and Aria DLC. Would love to see how that plays out, if you know what I'm talking about.
Yeah man. There's a lot of potential in the whole Wrex & Aria "conspiracy"
Another post, mentioned maybe a story that would lead up ME3. Like How did Wrex, get a hold of Mordin?
What exactly happened to the females?
Maybe a DLC of Krogans & Turians on Palavan's Moon. Since Wrex & Grunt both had to go their together, we can see more of them fighting.
I like to see Actual Reapers in the DLC. ME3 we were only fighting reaper troops & cerberus. The game should be focusing on how to battle Sovereign type Reapers. Krogans & Turians together doing this would be great Story IMO.
Also, for Wreav fans (as myself and Abishepard) I like to see more Wreav. I find him hilarious and he's very distinct from Wrex, so this would add new flavor to the story ie Replay Value
