I'm just going to buy dragon age origins and 2 and this question is regarding DLC for both. Are there any DLC that is essential and must have? Is there any that is not worth the money and should be avoided? Or is all DLC worth buying. This is for both games

There is a ultimate or GOTY version for DA:O that you can get that includes all the DLC.

DA2 does not have one so I would just get the game first and if you like it pick up Legacy and Mark of the Assassin

If I had to rate them, I'd say:

1) Legacy
2) Shale (but I assume you'll get that automatically)
3) Mark of the Assassin
4) Leliana's Song
5) Golems of Amgarrak (hey, I liked it)
6) Warden's Keep
7) Witch Hunt
8) Return to Ostagar
9) Darkspawn Chronicles (well I never bothered to try it, looked dumb)

I'd say all of them are kinda worth it, except Darkspawn Chronicles, notwithstanding that they're the same price now as when they came out. Witch Hunt and RtO are kinda crap, but they add to the lore still.

Get DAO ultimate edition. I wouldn't recommend DA2, but if your heart is already set on getting it, then you might as well purchase Legacy & MOTA. DA2 dlc is better than the core game, so it may sweeten your gaming experience.

I recommend just buying the Dragon Age: Origins Ultimate Edition which includes all the DLC and the Awakening expansion fairly cheap. I'd also advise buying the Exiled Prince and Legacy DLCs first for Dragon Age II, but if you don't enjoy Legacy I wouldn't bother with Mark of the Assassin.

As others have stated. It'd probably be worth buying the Ultimate Edition of Origins. Not *all* the DLC is great, but it's well worth having Shale, Awakening and i suppose Witch Hunt, if you end up liking Morrigan.

As for Dragon Age II, i'd say the Exiled Prince is worth it. Sebastian isn't a great character, but he adds a certain level of sanity to the Companion Crew and adds a certain twist. Legacy is pretty essential, there's technically a major plot point that occurs in it, so i'd also recommend that.

I personally wouldn't recommend Mark of the Assassin, but i'm pretty much the only person that wouldn't. People have praised it quite a bit, so my general understanding is most people have liked it.

At the very least though - Stone Prisoner, Awakening and Witch Hunt for Origins. Legacy and Exiled Prince for Dragon Age II.

The Dragon Age Origins Ultimate edition can be found fairly cheaply. I also really like Legacy and Mark of the Assassin for DA2. Both were pretty good dlcs.

For DA:O i think you should get the DLC Awakening. Awakening will give you much better understanding of the choices you have to chose in DA2. And i 100% agree with Filament on that list.

Get the Origins Ultimate Edition. There's absolutely no reason not to.

With DA2, wait until you play the game to decide if you like it. If you do, I recommend both Legacy and Mark of the Assassin. The Exiled Prince is fair (I like Sebastian well enough, but I don't think the game suffers too much without him).

Get the DAO:UE which has all the DLC.

DA2 DLC is quite pricey(except Legacy, which while not my cup of tea is probably the best), and not really worth it IMO.

When I see the terms "essential" and "must have" I think expanding on the main story of the game, or adding to your character in a significant/meaningful way.

Almost all of the DAO DLC are really great in that regard. However I think the absolutely essential ones are Return to Ostagar and Witch Hunt simply because they are directly related to events in the game. Stone Prisoner, while really great in adding its own unique content, as well as a new, wonderful, companion, is less essential. Warden's Keep gives more background on the Grey Wardens (as well as a reallly handy storage chest), but is even less integral to the story of DAO than Stone Prisoner. Leliana's Song and Darkspawn Chronicles are sort of outside DLC in that they take you away from the story of DAO and have you play as other characters, not your Warden. Golems of Amgarrak is just... meh.

Also, while I don't consider this a DLC, you should pick up the DAO Awakening expansion. It adds a full 20 hours of content and continues the story of your Warden from the main game.

If you do get all of the DLC, Return to Ostagar, Warden's Keep, and Stone Prisoner all integrate into the main game that you access while you play. Witch Hunt and Golems of Amgarrak are separate DLC where you import your character. They should be played in order of: DAO, DAA, GoA, WH, then you import into DA2.

For the DA2 DLC, I would highly recommend Legacy because your get some additional background on Hawke's family, and The Exiled Prince because one of the quest events ties in with the overall story of DA2. Mark of the Assassin, while providing some additional insight on the Qunari, is less integral, I think. The Black Emporium is fantastic and you should definitely get it: there are some great things to buy in terms of weapons and armor, an optional 5th party member in a pet wardog, and respec potions you can't get anywhere else, all very useful in all difficulties of the game.

All of that said though, I would suggest to play the main games, and if you like them enough to play again, then get the DLC. You don't want to have spent extra dollars and then think it a waste.

You missed the boat - Amazon had a package deal of DA:O Ultimate Edition and DA2 for ten bucks a couple of weeks ago!

That said, you should absolutely just buy the UE of Origins. It comes with all DLC and the Awakening expansion, and it's all pretty great except the Darkspawn Chronicles, which I haven't played (watched it being played though - it was kind of stupid).

DA2, you should pick it all up. Black Emporium is handy for all the reasons Nightscrawl mentioned, but the real winner which s/he didn't mention is the Mirror of Transformation, which lets you change your appearance whenever you want. Legacy is generally great.

Mark of the Assassin is... eh. I would say yes, pick it up. I think whether you really like it or kind of like it depends on whether you like the companion you receive (and are forced to bring), Tallis. I thought she was annoying, a lot of people liked her. Whether you do or you don't like her, there is some really great, funny dialogue (overall great writing) and some interesting stuff on the Qunari.
