So, I popped in to ME3 today thinking that maybe I'd play a couple of rounds with my usual group of friends. I was sent an invite to do exactly that, but instead of putting me in the match, I got a strange message that I have never seen before, and certainly hadn't seen last night when I was playing with the same group of friends.

"You cannot join your Friend's game because you are not using the same version of the game. Please download the latest patch and try again."

Needless to say, I found this incredibly odd, as I had not been prompted to download a patch, so I updated my PS3's firmware, seemed like a good start. After doing this however, I have the same cryptic message appear. After checking the PS store, I see that I still have all of the DLC, just like I did yesterday. After trying to load up the game again I am still not prompted to patch. I also am still denied entry to my friend's game.

What happened in less than 24 hours that could have done this?

That same issue happened to me too, among others. Have no idea what causes it. I went through and redownloaded all the packs and game data today, and haven't seen it since. But I did just get kicked from a match, so apparently, it didnt work. A couple of things have happened (weapons and power patches, Operation Overwatch completed) but nothing that I have seen that would cause that error.

the New DLC Earth Maps is what triggers this. London, Vancouver, Rio. Set Map to Non earth DLC maps if you have these problems. then invite your friends.

until a Compatibility patch or something of the like is made. we Be all SOL.
