Maybe a dumb question, but I'm lost... in the equipment bonuses (gear/armor) do the shield upgrades/buffs affect barriers? It only says '+X% shields' or shield recharge or what-not... since I'm rather romantically attached to my N7 Slayer, I'd like to figure this out because my barrier goes down pretty quickly.

Yes they do. Barriers in relation to a player character is considered the same as shields, merely named differently to thematically fit biotic characters.
