I'm pretty much the opposite. I usually keep my mic unplugged due to the aforementioned XBL squeaky voices, but if people start talking and actually seem like decent people I'll plug my mic in and join in on the conversation. I always find that games where people actually communicate go by much quicker.
A lot of it could be avoided if someone at Bioware just had the damn sense to do what every other developer does with MP and add a mute button. Multiplayer done right my ass.
Very rarely have I encountered people actually communicating, mostly they just use the mic to scream, force me to listen to their so-called-music, give me inappropiate insight into their personal life through background noise, breathe heavily, or in the least annoying case, but still annoying, talking about stuff that has no relation to the game.
Yes, I realize you two are friends, but I really have no interest in hearing about your weekend. Even better when it's in German, French, Spanish or some other language that might as well just be gibberish to me.
