Kinda like the gear on the front yeah :)

For this one i just did it super basic, tho im thinking of a copper lightning rod at top, and for trim, and more tapering as you suggested...

(first draft looked more like Big Ben, but got deleted by accident, lol)

Lots of cool concept art here: Clocktower Images, Antique clock face Images

Fave clockface is St. Marks in Venice Italy, by good ol' Leo DaVinci (an awesome artist, builder, designer and wargamer :D)

A 24 hour clock BTW :)

Is it possible to slow the animation scale down enough to make a "working" clockface? I'm thinking one or two frames per five minutes, so either 144 or 288 frames for a complete 12 hour rotation. I know there are options in Gmax for animation time scale, but I don't know if NWN supports it.

I think it'd really add to the placeables if they "worked", so to speak. Even if it needed one per common minutes/hour scale.

I saw a few unique sets of clocks in one hak. Each hand was represented by a number of placeables, was rather clever in how it was implemented. Will see if it's still on my HD and will post it for dissection/education purposes.

@Carcerian - That's incredibly beautiful  I wonder if there is any implied astrological signifigance to Scorpio's claws penetrating into the space occupied by Libra.  All the signs except those two are clearly separated into their own domains.

@Failed.Bard - AFAIK, a default animation for a placeable can have an unlimited number of frames, so you could do whatever you like.  And GMax could handle anything you can throw at it as far as inorganic (i.e mechanical) animations.  Can't do an accurate clock with regular animations AFAIK, because the model is being unloaded and reloaded by the cache manager as it comes into view.  Even if you wanted to get tricky and use a static placeable (which would not be unloaded) with an animated texture of semi-accurately moving hands, you still have no idea when it would get loaded, and it would start from the beginning as a person first entered the area.

There are a couple of ways that it could be made accurately.   I think usagreco66kg is thinking of Ana Hak.  Contents of that hak look interesting, maybe a little dull- until you realize how heavily animated they are.  Someone once pointed out this gem and I've been fascinated by it ever since.  But back to the clocks in there:  There's even a clock where a lady comes out and chases her husband with a rolling pin or something like that, on the "hour", IIRC.

No idea how they keep accurate time, though, or if they do.  Never checked.  One way would be to spam one large animation over several a number of animation constants and play through them all (via scripting), such as was done in Trooper9's Yuan-Ti dancer.  You kind of have to look at it in Max and look at the scripting to see what's going on.  Or making a race/phenotype/appearance where the 20 custom animations were used to represent the progression of time.  Thinking about it, though, the most accurate way is probably the most clunky and least elegant, which is just having the hand positions be represented by placeables and destroying and creating those to give the illusion of progression.

Then again, it is close to 2AM here.  Definitely something I could be forgetting.

Heh, reminds me of old convo's about Orrerys :

Posted Image

Stonemonkey's Orrery (mdl)

Tseramed's Giant Orrery (code)

As far as clocks go, i could see a few different routes.... (time based scripting required)

#1: A blank clock face, with animated hands as part of the mdl...

#2: A set of different clock models for each hour, with appearance changes as needed...

#3: A clock with VFX for the hands (seemingly the "optimal" soloution)

#4: a Clock placable, with seperate hand placables

#5: Something using the oldtimeradio animated textures technique (at least for seconds)

#6: A 70's tech alarm clock, with moving odometer wheels/dropping panels

Posted Image

#7: some sort of pendulum

Posted Image

#8: a panoramic clock, based on a day/night wheel, or a belt of a seamless scene...

Posted Image

#9 : Time Candles

Posted Image

#10: Water Clocks

#11: Swiss Coo Coo Clocks (@radio these are the kind were the wife chases the husband with a rolling-pin, lol)

Posted Image

#12: Good God its late, OTR is right...

There is a Steampunk ring or two in the latest compilation I threw together :)  Of course if the vault would update regularly the rings would get more exposure as well.

How about a clock face placeable. Think oc cobble circular stone that makes a face more three dimensional by adding depth. This could be added to any building including the vanilla wizards tower.

Seriously tempted to have a pop at this... I think using different time settings in PWs would be a problem though. What's the most common 2 or 3 mins / Hr?

I've been busy moving to a new house this month, so haven't had time to make anything yet.  Hopefully I'll get time before September 1st.

This must be a busy month for others, too.  We're half way through, and not much word on what people might be making.  Lots of suggestions though.

What I've noticed so far: status

Oh, and I corrected the link to the poll for September's theme in the initial post in this thread.  Turns out I still had August's URL in there.

I got informed by Carcerian that content can be freely submitted without deadlines anymore, or is that incorrect information?

Still good to make up a deadline anyways for yourself, even if there isn't one!

There is still a deadline each month for submissions.  New content that matches a previous challenge is accepted later, but getting it added to the Vault entry with the other content for that month seems to be generally put off for a time (ie, whenever the compiler person gets around to it).

Rolo Kipp was the person in charge of doing that, but nobody has heard from him in quite some time, so I've added it to my list of things to do on the side.  Hence, the change in submission email address, since I don't have access to the regular CCC gmail account.

To be a bit clearer hopefully (still trying to find Rolo's orig post regarding the policy change/clarification)

At the end of the month, the challenge content gets submitted to the Vault as normal.

Content submitted after the deadline is considered a "2.0" update, and at the end of the year was to be compiled as part of an annual add-on.

The reason for this (at least as far as  i understood) is so that later entries are allowed, but not forcing the custom content manager to recompile each hak/collection every time, and allowing those builders using the original custom content collections to not have to update haks constantly, but instead still having the option to update later if desired.

So... how's this theme coming along? It's pretty quiet.

I'm still plugging away but I blew a bunch of time on a couple of things that just didn't pan out.  So I'm changing my approach to something a bit simpler.  I probably won't have screenshots until I get a few pieces made.  But I'm definitely still working on the theme.

I thought this might be more fitting for the theme than the clocks...

Borden, that engine really is Dynamite! I'm not normally much on steampunk, but you guys are getting me interested. I'll be very glad to see whatever anyone can offer; as TAD pointed out, many are too busy to spend much time on this, so all results are that much more appreciated.B)

Just a quick idea on how one might mix magic with steampunk:

A small fire elemental trapped under a source of water by a wizard. Frustrated elemental just gets hotter, boiling said water to drive a steam engine. Wizard gets "free" mechanical energy without using a huge windmill or waterwheel.

Posted Image I can't believe I've just read this! In this enlightened age such a barbaric act could never be justified, energy crisis not withstanding, the idea of incarcerating another creature (albeit a vicious pyromaniac) in such a cruel manner purely for convenience is appalling. Elementals have feelings too you know... Posted Image

Ok, fine.  Maybe a small permanent portal to the Elemental Plane of Fire.  More difficult to do initially, and runs the risk of other things coming through to the Prime Material, but less mean to things spellcasters use for cannon fodder all the time.
