BS cop out I think. If that's the case, why use gravity? Why use humans? Why use the bloody earth? Fantasy is fine, but when you put absolutely no effort in looking up military organization on the wikipedia, then that's just lazy writing.

Let me say this,

I was in the Military-- got out last year. I can see why this bothers you. I used to complain about stuff like this a lot when I see movies, but then I asked brother... Why is this like that, blah , blah, blah...

He's also in the Military and here's what he told me. Since they portray Military Services they can't be exactly right, e.g., when they wear the Beret it has to be puffed up instead of flattened over left ear, when they wear rank for example, a Captain might be called Colonel, instead of rank being their chest it's on the collar of the Uniform, instead of calling an Officer "Sir" they call them by the rank, Captain, Major, Colonel etc., and when they salute they don't salute properly, because if they did or do anything like the actual Military it would be disrespectful. Also, they don't shave another thing Military personnel have to do.

Trust me, the left handed salute was the 1st thing noticed and it made me sick, but then I remembered what my brother told me and now I just laugh, but I understand. It took me a while to enjoy Transformers and GI Joe or any other movie that has a Military reference because of all these silly little flaws.

Same goes for video games, Mass effect (since it's the topic at hand) is a prime example. Admiral Hacket is in Charge, but they call themselves "Marines". An Admiral is in charge of the Navy (see your 1st mistake), a four star General is in charge of the Marines, Air Force and Army.

I hope that clears up something, if not oh well. Deal with the fact that Mass Effect is fantasy and not reality.

Good day. :pinched:

a I know what you mean, it would be "Impersonating a member of the armed forces" would it not?

which is a felony, if I'm not mistaken...

something confuses me though, having had AF backing that the uniforms and the way the USCMJ was portraited were supposedly accurate on Stargate-SG1? RDA even was made honorary Colonel or BrigGen... dont't remember which one...

like I said, supposedly Stargate was not slightly off but highly accurate down to the pins on the dress blues...

NCIS is supposedly not far off either...

not being american, it's hard to tell for me... just seems pretty accurate (that's just from the viewpoint of: yeah, that looks real, like real military...)

The left handed saluting is silly.

The ranks are also silly, but, hey, maybe they were drawn up while the alliance was found by some committee. Maybe the committee was drunk. Maybe they submitted an obviously stupid idea because all the sensible ideas were being blocked by politics, and then it somehow got voted through.

There not being an Alliance army makes sense to me. Human colonies are at their current stage basically indefensible, being scattered and underpopulated. The Alliance doctrine calls for rapid response units attached to Space forces.

Earth itself might have armies, but they wouldn't be Alliance forces. And they'd probably be rather low quality, because most people wouldn't expect them to be used - 9/10 if the enemy controls Space around Earth around then the only sane option is surrender

So what about all these TV series and movies and books that sure as hell dont have accurate facts about these things, for example medical drama's half the procedures they do are crap and wouldnt ever be attempted by real doctors... the point im making is its fiction it doesnt necessarily have to be accurate as its not fact, yes if this was a documentary game about the military fair enough but its not, its a work of science fiction, they could have made it all up... hmmm they did. hell even if they had got it accurate judging by the community on these forums, something else would have been found to moan about.

I don't care if he's a cerberus operative or not, IN ANY ARMED FORCES IN ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, YOU SALUTE WITH THE RIGHT HAND. To do otherwise is disrecptuful. So this Cerberus marine was disrepctifing Shepard, maybe that's why he's gone afterwards. Who knows.

Maybe in the future, people actually got over that little prejudice? Maybe they can salute with whichever is their primary hand?

Difference here, as I see it, is that medical procedure is usually shortened and fictionalised for the sake of time...

but such a small thing as a salute?

I remember a scene from L-Word where Alice is left-handedly saluting her girlfriend... said girlfriend says that a) she's using the wrong hand and B) you do not salute indoors...

like I mentioned it's a small thing but it can be done right even if nothing else is correct...

I must admit, that as an IT guy, it annoys me a lot when movies get computer stuff wrong. So I can relate to something like this. I bet this is even easier to get right than my stuff… No offence to those in the military. (And no, I’m not talking high level military stuff, but ranks and right or left hand and consistency is easy to get right.)

In the German military, if you're unable to use your right hand for saluting (because it's been broken, not because you're carrying something in it), you are to use your left hand instead.

So much for "all militaries always use the right hand, using the left is disrespectful".

if you do carry something in your right hand, you are to switch hands or put down whatever you are carrying (as long as such an action does not threaten lives... correct

being unable to actually use your right hand is the only reason this applies, but when it happens in games or movies it's usually quite apparent that the right hand is not in any way disabled...

this is probably too obscure?

i wonder where the alliance army is?

There is no such thing as an Alliance army. All ground forces are completely dependant on the navy for deployment, so the Alliance has ceased to distinguish between the two.

So why is our Army called an "Army" and why isn't it just a branch of the Air Force/Navy?

Or do we somehow march/drive to overseas battlefields?

Actually the army has it's own Aviation. When I was in the army I worked in the aviation unit of the Army, we used the Air Force for our weather information though. They had one little office on our base. :)

So final boss is too "video gamey", but when it comes to silly mistakes like saluting with left hand - come on it's a video game. Double standards.

its fantasy, they can establish whatever they want. if this thread gos on i will make petition for a codexentry explaining why it is possible to salute either with right or left hand.
its probably to honor a comanding officer during the 1
contact war. he lost his right arm in battle doing heroic things which impressed alliance navy so much.

also its strange that characters always wear battle armor. where is theyr parade uniform? damnit bioware.

Noooooo….. the nightmares… they are coming back….
Yeah I saw it, laughed loudly in the cinema every time they showed something tech related. As fate would have it, earlier that day I had just finished configuring our company’s firewalls and routers for our new remote office. Let me put it this way, if I had done what he did, I would have been fired the same day.

If you want to get critical about this game, you might just want to blow it up.

It's Sci Fi, you're not going to get much realism... looking for it here is a near-endless journey. Plus this is like 180 years in the future, perhaps some huge war used the Right-handed salute as a symbol like how the peace-sign of the Swastika was destroyed by the N A Z I s.

Perhaps a new military code? Maybe Marines don't do much, and they are just considered soldiers? I've never bee nin the military but I don't see the problem if they are called soliders, after all Earth is United, it isn't U.S.A. Space-Mode Activated.

And besides, if everything was so realistic, it would be pointless to play the game when it would be like real-life so you get up and do exactly how it is ingame if it was real. Games are to escape, notice how there isn't anyone fat and that everyone has the same outfit...

Just my opinion on the situation

you are of course right on the point of escapism.

it's just a point of personal pride for a soldier (for any vocation, may it be chef, medical personnel, IT people, etc. really) to see at least those things done right that are easily done right...

I'm not expecting a movie to get the uniforms down to the last detail (which is illegal anyway) but is it soooo hard to salute correctly?

and speaking for the whole undead community, Resident Evil anyone?, the actors went through zombie school...

so comparing the effort put into zombies to the effort put into soldiers...
