Nope. It's almost universally frowned upon in every military unless your right hand is injured and you're unable to use it to salute.Heather Cline wrote...
I hate to tell you this but those people who are left handed salute with their left hand.

Wikipedia claims it's OK if you're on a motorbike.

While I don't care at all about these things in ME, I wanted to point out that as far as I can tell (from a quick review on Wikipedia) most countries marines are actually a branch of the Navy. So if you are going to have a knee-jerk anti US reaction to someone's post you might consider getting your facts right first ...Nezzer wrote...
Too many people think the Systems Alliance is just the US that has conquered the world and imposed their military tradition on every other country. Yes, saluting with your left hand is really stupid, but about the marines not calling themselves "soldiers" is just an American thing. In most other countries they are just a branch of the Army.

And also, Bioware is Canadian, right? So... Yeah. They probably just took the military they were most familiar with and based the Alliance off of that. It makes sense. Did you really expect the team at Bioware to sit there and find out the traditions and norms of EVERY army in the WORLD?

So? That doesn't make my opinion here any less valid, I'm pointing out some problems. the LOL ITS JUST A VIDEO GAME thing is really just a way to say "lol shut up"
Also Alenko is Lt. in ME 1 (0-3 by Navy standards) then a Lt. Commander in ME 2 (0-4) and then ME3...Major (0-4 of another branch)
And let's not even go to how Williams jumped from mid enlisted rank to Navy O-4

It isn't an insult to salute with your left hand if you are left handed. Seriously that's just messed up saying that the guy saluting with his left hand is insulting someone without knowing if the person is left handed or not.
As for everything else about military inconsistency... well the entire Mass Effect Franchise is shot to hell so who gives a damned anyways? BioWare fu**ed up their game so bad in ME3 it's not recoverable by any means.
In the US Army, you have to salute with your right hand - there is no left-handed salute if you're left handed. I don't know about the other US services, but I can't imagine they would be different unless you physically cannot salute right-handed. Granted I've been out for about 20 years, but I never heard about this being changed

But you're not giving your opinion. You're calling a company retarded because they got some military jargen wrong.
So... Yeah, you should shut up. If you have a more civil polite way of expressing your opinion, by all means, go for it.

Except that Canada doesn't have marines, and if they did they would be a branch of the navy (like the UK). Again, I don't care at all about whether or not marines in ME are called soldiers but if you are going to make claims about real world facts (in this case Canadian marines) why not spend 30 seconds finding out whether or not you are correct?Logan Cloud wrote...

Oh and I've also noticed people saluting officers in a war zone in the games, you don't do that...ever. That identifies the officer as a target.

You misunderstood. I was referring to the American's Marines with the top statement.
The statement below that was simply saying that the company itself is Canadian, so it's ridiculous to assume that Bioware would choose anything other than a military force close-to-home as a model for the Alliance.
I suppose they would be most familiar with their own military, not the US', so I apologize for that part. I didn't fully think that through, but I did mean the US.
I don't need to check a Wikipedia page most of the time concerning the Army or the Navy, as my mother and father were in both. My dad's also in the National Guard as of now, so... Yeah.

I don't care if they use fake ranks or fake branches, or whether it's like Canadian or U.S. Military, as long as they're consistent with them. And they're not.

Fair enough (and sorry if I sounded grumpy), as I said I'm firmly in the "don't care because its a fictional future military camp" and I suspect that Bioware just made it all up without referring to any real military (which I have no problem with).Logan Cloud wrote...

People with longer hair can only have their hair in buns.
Okay I'll make allowances for pony tails.
But loose hair flopping in front of ones face? That's daft.
Tie it properly or cut it short.

The thing is you are in a small minority of people who know enough about the subject to notice the inconsistencies and care about them. For what its worth there are much more glaring inconsistencies in ME and (and most other video games), such as Shepard being able to use medigel to instantly heal his / her squad but nobody else can.NKKKK wrote...
Also my rant isn't how it should be exactly like real world military, but how they need to reflect real world military and proper protocol.

The Alliance isn't US Navy, US Army, US Air Force, US Marines any more than it is Royal Navy, Army and whatever branches of service from the UK, or Japanese, German, French, Russian, etc, etc, etc. Therefore, the ranking structure really doesn't matter that much based on our own perspectives, even if it does seem to fly in the face of tradition in some cases.
Another way to look at it...
Much of the Alliance forces are technicians and specialists of some kind or another involved in space-faring service, no longer split apart as Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen or Marines.
While I may chafe a little at some of the lack of respect for more common traditions at times, it really doesn't other me that much.
Oh yes, USN Ret. (shoulder length hari and all).

It's especially silly when they had it right in the first game.
