A thread on BSN is like tossing a soccer ball into a plaza. You really aren't in control anymore--and attempts to take control don't work and are rather silly.

Very cool, but don't tell me to stop trying to de-derail this thread, this is a serious topic I'm trying to put.

You do that by saying things like "guys, can we please stay on topic?" not "I TOLD you to stay on topic!" They sound completely different.

This thread is hilarious.

Systems Alliance = space US Armed Forces.
American customs apply to the entire galaxy now.
In the future left-handed people won't use their good hand to salute because it is disrespectful.
Cultures won't change in the next 100 years.
Military protocol won't change either.
SciFi universes = reality

Let's change to civilian life and try to apply real world physics to eezo and mass effect fields, shall we?

Was going to let this just slip by, but some of the cracks did touch a nerve in this old vet.

Writing a story that features the military in a central role and not doing your home work is the equivalent of writing a story about King Arthur living in the fifth century wearing plate armor.

Or how about a Science Fiction story about a future computer genius who still uses DOS and floppy discs?

Or this is my favorite (ran into it today when reading a book but run across it literally all the time in fiction) an author equipping his character with a revolver and then having him put the safety on...

Or TV shows and films showing a character with a Glock and then having the effects man add the sound of the hammer being pulled back to **** the weapon.

This is not esoteric stuff but common sense. Plate is a late Medieval development, revolvers do not have safeties, no one uses DOS anymore, and Glocks do not have exposed hammers that can be manually cocked. A thirty second search on Google is all that is needed.

Writers have a responsibility, to do their homework. Either get it right or don't do it. Saluting with the wrong hand, confusion about military ranks vs specialties and the other issues pointed out are just the worst sorts of amateur writing. If you do not know anything about the military, maybe you should be writing about something else.

Just because some customers have a limited knowledge base (and therefore may not notice the errors) does not excuse laziness on the part of the writer to get his facts straight.

Personal pique mode on: You people want to play as if you are one us, doing the kinds the things that the best of the best of us take years of miserable training and enormous personal sacrifice to achieve, but you are not willing to take ten minutes to even get the basic facts right. Then you sneer at us because we point out the errors and ask the writers to do better.
Personal Pique Mode Off

Thanks for letting me vent.

What is the problem with mass effect fields? Dark Energy repulses matter and other things (It causes the ongoing expansion of the Universe). And this is what generates the mass effect fields. And Dark Energy is very real. E-Zero on the other had is only a BioWare brainchild, I guess.

It's set in a fictional version of the future. Modern day customs and practices do not apply. They can salute with whatever hand they want to, wear whatever they want to, have whatever ranks, designations and insignia they want to.

No, do some research, from medieval times to fictional futures this isn't going to change. This is the one thing that's not going to change.

Go back to Tech School and march around a few times.

Do americans even know why they salute the way the do?

German soldiers totally exaggarate their right hand while saluting, as to nearly cover their right eye. It derives from the middle ages, where knights opened their visors to acknowladge a fellow "pass by" knight they are no enemy and, of course, to honour them (quick explanation).

This probably goes for all european military, as all of them have a very long history.

US soldiers didn't invent that kind of "greet", they never carried a shield on their left... neither do the ME ones...(until the Paladin came walking down the road of course).

Back to tech school? Listen, I'm starting to have my doubts you're in the same military as me because I know we weren't taught to conduct ourselves like this.

I don't even know why the hell tis anti-U.S. sentiment has to do with this thread.

Raptor-Jesus help me. Salutes come in many different forms, but IT IS ALWAYS DONE WITH THE RigHT.

Common sense would dictate that you cannot predict the future.

About Ashley's hair in ME3. I was surprised they allowed for her hair to be like that considering how they explained away the limit of hairstyle types in ME1 because Shepard is military (It really irked me to see her like that!). I also didn't get the wrong hand salute either, I thought maybe it was a mirror thing or something, but it bothered me. What's the reason for it? If I remember correctly Shepard even salutes left handed at one point in time.

Let me explain this to you in a nice way.

All of the planet's armed forces salute with their right hand.
The systems alliance is a future anagram Earth Military, whose traditions follow western style military, whose traditions, including the salute, goes back to the middle ages when knights would lift their visors with their right hand to identify themselves.
Troops in Mass Effect salute with their right hand.

I was in the army, and I only get irked when I see Hollywood mess up things related to the US army. For a science fiction military service, as long as they establish rules and guidelines and stay consistent with them throughout the game, that's fine with me
