as long as they establish rules and guidelines and stay consistent with them throughout the game, that's fine with me

But they don't...that's the problem

Read it again, as long as THEY establish guidelines. Not the world's militaries.

There is also the whole notion that the left hand is used for uncleanly things, making it more of an insult to salute with it. In some cultures, on earth, it is considered an insult to even eat left handed.

Dear Future Humans From 2186,

This is a message from the year 2012. Just a quick note, albeit an important one - if you are saluting with your left hand; stop it because some guy on the internet said so.

Yours sincerely,
Some other guy on the Internet.

PS. Sorry about the whole Skynet thing. Our bad.

They established decent guidelines in ME1, ME2 didn't break that too much, but ME3 holy ****.

Attempting to belittle people just because they want to express that something rubbed them the wrong way isn't adding to the discussion. You can say it didn't bother you without attacking the person personally.

Is it? Because it's basically what you're doing.

You're claiming to know for an absolute fact what a future military in a fictional setting will - without any room for doubt - do.

I'm not going there with you or with him.

Left handed salutes are wrong, even in a future setting. It was obviously a developer oversight, as most of the time the characters get it right.

But his premise that ficitional military members can salute however they want is simply wrong, both reallistically and in the same setting itself.

Let me update the hilarity list:

- Common sense alone predicts future scenarios.
- Free neutrons are stable now and ignore beta decay.

The writers can do whatever they want with their world.

And whatever that is; is the truth of the setting.

And that truth is, in ME, not everyone salutes right-handed.

Just because a fictional story does not conform to contemporary customs; does not mean it'swrong.

Left handed salute are wrong, end of story.

What another poster said in another thread

I have to disagree with you there, because saluting with the right hand
is not just protocol for Western militaries. It is in fact an ancient
and deeply ingrained tradition in all human cultures. The modern
military salute evolved from an ancient version where people would raise
their right hand (the sword hand) to show that they were not
brandishing naked steel. (or bronze, if you want go back further)

In the end I'll wave it off as a stupid Cerberus Commando that we never see again.

But let me go back, left handed salutes are wrong in any setting that tries to present itself as serious with a military theme. Sci-Fi Space navies are one of them

Left handed salute are wrong, end of story.

Fighting with longbows, or muskets later, felt wrong for many people too a few hundred years ago. ;)

Things don't have to conform to any sort of custom or standard.

To be realistic it does need to be consistent, as uniformity and discipline is needed by any military force.

I wouldn't care if the military salutes by pulling down their pants, bending over, sticking their thumb up their ****h0le and then brought the thumb up to sniffed by the officer, so long as it's consistent=P

This is isn't technology, it's a deeply ingrained tradition.

Han Shot First wrote...
The problem is that they'd be throwing out
thousands of years of human tradition. Saluting with the right hand is
so ingrained in human culture, that switching to the left would be
unlikely. Also, there are people in the game who salute with the proper
(right) hand as well. A military organization even in the future, would
have rules & regs covering customs & courtesies like salutes.
There would be a uniform way in which it was rendered. (either right or
left, but not both)

That actually honours you. I just made that feeble minded abbrevation up to show how horrible it is reading some people on the internet. It probably took me longer to make up that crap, than it would have taken me to spwll it out.
