I prefer the fictional military of mass effect, as opposed to our real life military that is just a tool of governments and banks to make "peace" by invading nations to stop the big bad terrorists. This is a game set in a fictional world, I'm quite glad it's nothing like the military IRL.

Being a tool isn't so bad.

Here's why some of the future-space-soldiers salute with their left hand.

The Alliance wanted to work together with the Turians and other aliens.

What if, in the Turian military, or in the asari culture ( since they don't have a military force similar to humans), or whatever, saluting with your right hand means disrespect, and since in ME 3 every race is working together, they had to change the right handed salute to left handed, so the aliens on board of the alliance ships wouldn't be confused or insulted in any way.

Just like how polish soldiers working together with the Allies had to salute with the whole hand, instead of just 2 fingers like they normally do, so they wouldn't insult foreign soldiers.

I do not quite understand why the US Marines don't want to be called soldiers, but ok,
it's irrelevant to Mass Effect universe, though, we didn't see any US marine in the game, only alliance personnel.

Two finger salute is done with the right hand

But it isn't, it's actually self admitted developer oversight.

Like allot of other's said, the game is set in the future and by then the whole ranking system could've changed in major/minor ways.

And the other council races could've had an impact on it in some way and humanity had to change its military system to bring it up to date with the others. or something along those lines.

If there is one thing that's important to a military organisation it's uniformity, but for some stupid reason i'm unable to give the Alliance marines serving aboard the Normandy SR2 (Including Shepard) identical armor sets, Why does everybody wear different armor sets, why can't shepard equip normal armor, he could three years ago, but after being ressurected he is only able to equip specific n7 armor parts that are strangly enough even available on Tuchanka.

When unifying the Canadian Forces the hand salute changed to be uniform with the navy variation, before then it was a mixture of the Navy and British salutes based on what branch of the service you were in. To me that means its possible that there could be a change in 200 years, but not likely.

Salute have changed over the past thousand years, but what won't chang is the fact that it's done with the right. Seriously, look at it up.

Ah just let it go. The game is fiction and while it's obvious that they didn't craft their world modelling real life military and customs, the alliance is pretty much a distant backdrop in the game anyways. Yes, Shepard and Anderson happens to be part of it, and yes, it sets the scene for Mass Effect 3 in the defense of Earth, but for the most part, the game revolves more on the characters, the adventure, the reapers, and less so on little strict military customs. It's probably clear that the props were made by civilians, but really, when we are talking about a sci-fi fantasy here, where we have blue supermodels at the top of the universe, and giant head butting frogs that speak English, I don't think most people would really care which hand they salute with, how high their beret is from their head, how many threads are sticking from their uniform, how straight their collars are, etc etc. One has to really be deep in the forces to really care about something so trivial, but even then, it's just a piece of entertainment that is meant for you to let loose and enjoy. If we start criticizing every NPC like an inspection, I think we're taking things a little too seriously ;)

Too many people think the Systems Alliance is just the US that has conquered the world and imposed their military tradition on every other country. Yes, saluting with your left hand is really stupid, but about the marines not calling themselves "soldiers" is just an American thing. In most other countries they are just a branch of the Army.

While I don't care at all about these things in ME, I wanted to point out that as far as I can tell (from a quick review on Wikipedia) most countries marines are actually a branch of the Navy.  So if you are going to have a knee-jerk anti US reaction to someone's post you might consider getting your facts right first ...

Where the hell did you see I was being anti-US? I just said that a lot of American ME fans think the Human Systems Alliance, and sometimes even the entire humanity, is just the US. Am I wrong about this?

That statement isn't going to end well.

You are mega trolling.

People don't hate America, they just don't like the small minority who act like you.  Every country has it, just people see it more cause they are exposed more to the American media.

Also chill out.  It's fiction set in the future.

I'm also left handed. So do you mind if I salute the world with my left hand instead of my right?

But it has, for example look at beards and mustaches customs, or hand salute (some time ago it was palm opened in front, now it is palm faced down)

Also, N7 is not really a specialization markation, it is indicator that one has passed 6 stages of  ICT program. It's not really a spec like what we have today for example designated marksman or similar

So, all military protocol has stayed the same from the year 1800's until today? Why do soldiers today not walk in rows wearing red coats?

You simply cannot hold a game and or book to a set of codes or rules 200 years or more in the future, it's illogical and it's silly, especially the way technology and the way of doing things changes faster and faster each year.
