 Hi,

I know this is probably not the most appropriate forum to post this in but the other 2 games technical forums are dead and buried so I was hoping that someone here could help me with this.

It's exactly as the title says, I try to run the configuration utilities on Mass Effect but it just keeps crashing. I started playing the game in late November 2011 and it always worked fine. I uninstalled the game about a month ago and installed it again today but for some reason the configuration utility will not work.

When I bought and first played the game (and Mass Effect 2 as well) my gfx card was a crappy Radeon HD 5450 but neither game ever complained. I updated to an Nvidia GTX 550 ti around March for Mass Effect 3 and have played both Mass Effect 2 and 3 as well as the Batman Arkham Asylum/City and Assassins's Creed games without any problems.

The reason I'm pointing out my gfx card switch and the games I've played since is because when I launch Mass Effect the graphics displayed in-game are probably in the lowest possible quality, even if I max everything up in the game's menu settings.

My specs are as follow:

Motherboard: Asus P7H55D-M PRO
CPU: Intel i3 540 3.07 Ghz
Ram: 4Gb
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bits
GFX: Nvidia GTX 550 ti (previously a Radeon HD 5450)

Can someone help me with this? I would me most appreciated :)

I myself run 64bit Ultimate win7 with dual 560TI nvidia, I have some simple questions id like to ask.

1. Did you reinstall via Origin? or from disk?
2. Are you running the config as Administrator?
3. Are you using a compatibility mode?
4. Have you contacted EA? https://help.ea.com/...t/mass-effect-3

Thanks for the reply [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/smile.png[/smilie]

1. I reinstalled it via disk (same as with ME2 and that one works just fine).

2. Wether I run it as administrator or not it always crashes.

3. As far as I can tell no. I installed it just like I did the first time and am running everything just as I used to only this time it won't let the configuration utility check my PC specs as it is supposed to.

4. They said they are no longer able to provide support for that game and that I should try the BSN forums <_<

I only think it might be related to my gfx card because even if I max everything in the in-game settings menu, the graphics still look extremely low rendered (although it doesn't lag even if I put it in maximum resolution of 1280x1024).

If you need any additional information please don't hesitate to ask :)

I am going to go on a long shot here so bear with me. As i see it two things you can possibly try are as follows.

#1 Compatibility Mode

A: Start > Computer
B: navigate to Mass Effect 2's Binaries folder mine is C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Mass Effect 2\\Binaries
C: Right click "MassEffect2Config.exe" select Properties
D: Second tab over should say "Compatibility", Put a check mark beside "Run this program in Compatibility mode for:"
E: Try Vista, or XP SP3. and click apply, attempt to open the program.
F: If this does not work when you run it no harm no foul, just go back and remove the check mark.

#2 Revert to Default Drivers/Progress to newer Drivers.

A: Start > Control Panel > Programs/Uninstall Programs
B: Uninstall NVIDIA Graphics Drivers and Software
C: Restart Computer
D: Install the Basic default drivers from the Disk provided with Card.
E: Restart if it says too.
F: Try the Game Config Utility if it works then it was a driver issue if not..continue to G:
G: Go to http://www.nvidia.co...ge/support.html and go download updated drivers, install, reboot, try game config again.

I will keep thinking on this at this point these are just two sujestions.

First of all, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me. I really don't know what might be wrong and maybe someone with better troubleshooting skills than me is able to figure it out.

Unfortunatelly neither method worked and I still can´t get the configuration utility to check my system's information without crashing.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game but it still keeps crashing.

This is happening only in Mass Effect 1. Both Mass Effect 2 and 3 are running fine.

Not a problem, its my intent to try and help as much as possible being as of late BioWare has for the lack of a better way of saying it "not helped or replied to any posts" as of late. I am a lover of the Mass Effect series primarily ME3, i do own and have installed all three versions.
I was thinking your issues with the configuration utility was with the ME2 one.. my bad. but the same thing would technically still apply to ME1. I do know ME1 was mainly based on XP systems, and when i run it on win7 its very glitch prone, like when i shoot i have to aim a inch high on my screen with a sniper rifle or looking through scoped weapons, main reason i do not play it anymore.
Hopefully i will have a brain fart and something to fix your problem will pop up. At the moment without the use of a sledge hammer i don't know.

I feel bad because I can't help you so much, I haven't ME1.

My suggestions (probably doesn't work) is go to your documents, folder "Bioware", "Mass Effect" and look into it if has a file called "systeminformation", move or delete it and try again. If not, try too in "Config" folder too for file called "MassEffectConfig".

Maybe someone with the original game can upload to you the .exe, or someone from Bioware, I think it doesn't need to spent much time in it.

Luck mate, hope will be fixed soon.
