In a word, durability. If the Slayer had more, then this could work well, but because of his weak health/barriers, using PD is extremely risky when exposed; even with the barrier drain reduction evo, the Slayer doesn't have enough barriers to expend in order to consistently use PD. Compare this to the Novaguard, who uses BC and Nova in a similar fashion: on paper it carries the same risk as the Slayer's combo because both characters have the same amount of health/barriers. However, the Novaguard gets away with his because he gains invincibility frames, while the Slayer does not. Effective survivability, therefore, is much higher for the Novaguard. The only way for the Slayer to compensate is to mix in light melee because he gains significant DR while performing those quick sword slashes, and this can buy some precious time while waiting on the BC cd. But that's not the same as being invincible for a few seconds, and it shows on gold and platinum matches.

That said, I do like PD, especially because of its range, and using it before charging is very useful. The problem is with repeating PD x2 or 3 after charging: the Slayer needs to be more durable for this to work on higher difficulties.

Sounds like your issue is with PD, not PD/BC. Nova gets invincibility frames regardless of BC, so what you say is the difference doesn't have anything to do with synergy. Anyway, I consider that the risk and reward of PD, just like anything else in the game.

I do well with him on Gold with 825/825 health and shields. I can't say whether he's good on Platinum, though I suspect he'd be harder to use with all the bosses. On Gold I stagger groups of enemies with PD so they're not shooting me, but that might not work so much on Platinum.

I didn't say that invincibility frames were dependent on using BC and Nova together, I said that invincibility frames are what make the combination effective and survivable. The same is not true for using PD and BC together, and that's the point of the comparison. Now, for clarification purposes I'm not suggesting that invincibility frames be given to the Slayer in any form, and I'd actually like to see them removed from the Novaguards' Nova because I think it gives him an unfair advantage; I'd prefer that he gained sufficient DR by other means, ideally in a manner that could be provided to all vanguards. Whether that should be done by increasing health and/or barriers is debatable, though I do have a fundamental issue with vanguards having the same amounts as adepts.

Regarding PD, my issue isn't with the percentage of barriers consumed, but rather with the maximum base barriers themselves: when you only have a max of 825 to work with, losing a minumum of 33% per PD does limit its value in CQC, which is where you're going to be if you follow up with BC. I've had limited success with the Slayer on gold--primarily against Geth since none of them can insta-kill--but a lot of that success doesn't come by way of PD/BC combos: most comes from weapon damage (mainly pistols for weight purposes), use of PD at range, or abuse of the BS through walls trick. BC becomes a primarily defensive move. Granted, I'm hardly an expert with the Slayer, and I don't at all doubt that you're more skilled with him than I am because I don't use him very often. However, I do doubt that his problems (including PD/BC synergy) can be easily solved by skill alone.
