I thought he was a pretty good antagonist. Tied the games in with the books a bit,

I am here to play games and have no interest in silly books.
Why is this person in mass effect? He does not belong in the game.

Yeah. He isn't tied to the books at all. He's given no reason for existance. I don't mind novel characters existing in the games, just as long as I know how they're tied into this mess.

Like, Kahlee Sanders who appears on Grissom Accademy. She's given her role and she fulfills it. I know she's a novels character but I don't have any questions from the game alone over her part in the game and I actually wouldn't be able to tell she's from the novels.

Now, They mention a Greyson Character on Cronos Station. I also recognise that name as being from what people have said about the books but both Shepard and I know nothing about him or where he fits into this and the fact I can't ask about it is annoying.

You can give reasons to hate antagonists without making them moronic trolls.

Kai Leng is a moronic troll. Moreover, he doesn't display any ability to back up his boasts.
He's incompetent, fails at everything he does and succeeds only with plot armour and cheating.
One way to guarantee that a player will look down on a character is having that character be easily beatable in gameplay then have them win in a cutscene.

Ah, the voice of reason is here.

I can see what you mean, and I get it now. He rarely succeeds, and when he does, he does so only through cheap tactics. And of course his boss fights are quite bland, but Mass Effect wasn't really made for boss fights. They always kind of sucked, except for the Proto-Reaper at the end of Mass Effect 2. That was great.

You shouldnt need novels and comics to flesh out a game character. That just stinks of EA/Bioware saying "gimme yo money".

The books weren't bad, the one the was supposed to flush out Leng's character and set him up as a credible foil for Shepard was Deception. That book was bad comedy.

He's a cardboard villain, lacking all complexity and character.

I don't know whether the supplementary novels make him more of a fleshed-out, balanced antagonist, but what we've got in the game is Mr. Black-stands-for-Evil spouting stupid one-liners.

In a universe that features lots of shades of grey, and lots of multi-faceted characters with complex agendas, he just stands out like a sore thumb.

I don't know what everyone's talking about, I thought he was a great villain, very believable. Especially with the buildup from deception.

Unfortunately it isn't just BioWare pulling this nonsense.
World of Warcraft is notorious for Blizzard pulling this, to the point that major characters appear out of thin air with no context or foreshadowing including leaders of entire factions and you're expected to read the (incredibly awful) books to find out about them.

Kai Leng is a complete joke. I've probably never seen a character who has felt more artificial than Leng. Weak writing, stupid looks and that email he sends you after Thessia that turns him into a comic book villain is just the icing on the cake.

A character who exists only because Bioware wants us to hate him has no place in the game.

Oh thank god. I thought it was only me. People keep telling me to try and play WoW and I just find the plot utterly confusing and I really have no idea what is going on...

Anyways, carry on...

Because he's TIM's lap dog. I know you have to read the books to get a proper characterization but the books should be optional. Apparently all the content is in the books, and what we see in the game is just a flashy fancy guy who lacks a brain.

Also the gameplay made him more hatable because the game cheats by making him invincible.

It's not the same as Saren on Virmire. The Saren thing happens a lot in Bioware games. The health bar reaches a point where a cutscene happens or the NPC says "ok ok I surrender!". Kai Leng is different: you get his shields down to one bar and that bar won't disappear for a while no matter how much you shoot at him and how many times you cast Overload on him. The game throws you into normal gameplay mode against an invincible enemy and forces you to watch his kewl floor-breaking skills as you keep shooting at him to no avail. For me that contributes to make him cheap.

-He blatantly abuses cutscene power to override the player.
-He has little to no personality or character development.
-His outfit makes him look like a rejected anime villain.
-He's something of a villainous Mary Sue. Everyone seems to lose about 100 IQ points when around him.
-He has very little plot relevance aside from being TIM's lackey and providing the requisite boss encounter.
-He's a coward and a moron, not something you want a supposed "Tough Boss Guy" to have. He runs the moment a fight starts going bad for him and had to rely on a gunship in Thessia. That crude email and his pathetic responses to Shepard just solidified it.
-Bioware tries to build him up as an uber-badass equal to Shepard and it comes off as forced and ineffectual.
-His whole "Space Ninja!" shtick looks out-of-place and just plain weird. Besides, he's Chinese, and ninjas were Japanese. :kissing:
-He's more of a plot device than a character. He exists solely to kill a few characters in a blatant attempt to make the player cry and provide a boss fight or two. Ironic that Bioware felt a final boss fight would be "too video gamey" and yet Kai Leng is exactly that.

There's a really big difference between a villain you love to hate, and a villain you just plain hate. Kai Leng definitely falls under the latter.

When you sit down to a tabletop roleplaying game with a Game Master who is brand-spanking new to storytelling, you get villains exactly like Kai Leng. To find that sort of thing in a story told by professionals, to me, is very annoying.
