A big problem about Kai Leng is that the threat he poses seems so artificial. It's like whoever wrote that part got the general idea down but didn't know how to execute it at all well. He only wins in cutscenes, and only then by having the "idiot ball" effect on everyone crank up to ridiculous levels. Like not shooting him, or crushing him like a bug on the Presidium.

Plus it doesn't help that his personality was cobbled together to be so... childish. I wouldn't be surprised if a "Neiner neiner neiner" was shouted out at one point during any of his fights.

Next big problem: Why the hell is he our antagonist in this game? We're supposed to be fighting Harbinger and his horde of Reaper buddies.

Kai Leng has his own indoctrination field. Only its not indoctrination. Its a retardation field.

I didn't quite know what to think of him? Thane whipped him, but got morally wounded in the battle, then he gives Shepard and team a hard time later? No wonder others don't like the caricature. Inconsistant and stereotypical karate movie villian with a varible effective skill set.

Now I'm going to imagine an unfitting dubbing over him every time he shows up.
Thanks.

So why does everyone hate him?

Firstly, I have read the books. I know it's sexist, and I apologize, but at one point he kills an unconscious woman just because he can. That's one of those moral event horizon thingies, and I just wanted to see him dead afterwards. But no, he magically survives the encounter with Anderson, goes on to kill another major character from the books (the autistic biotics experiment, with a toothbrush).

Then, in the game, he induces cut-scene incompetence in any encounter with Shepard - I'm an infiltrator and brought Garrus for good measure... so why can't I snipe him? No, I'm sure the Predator pistol of b*tchslap is much better idea...
That's just crappy writing - you beat him at every turn (even when he brings a gunship for support), but he still "wins" every encounter. That's just not fun to play.

Saren survived in a similar way. Except that cutscene involved me punching him in the face and me winning. Because I won the fight. Saren also didn't insist that he won the fight. Tela Vasir used a similar mechanic in her battle. Except she actually retreated out if sight instead of standing there like an idiot. Bioware apparently forgot how to do these fights.

hes hard to know unless you've read the books; at one point anderson points out that he shot kai leng in both legs so cerberus must have implanted him like they did grayson; - you will know none of this or who grayson even is / was unless you read the books.

He is incompentent, trite and cliche.

Then again, he is the embodiment of everything Cerberus did in ME1. Huge amount of hype and a weak finish that ends in failure.

Also, I shouldn't have to read books to know what is going on in the game.

is it just me or are 'the books' interfering with the 'the game' subject matter? They don't seem to be coinciding too well?

(kind of an ESP codexy plot confuser? if we don't read the books then we cannot read their  minds...and place out of game stuff in the game so as to understand it better.)

My problem with the guy is that he isn't more than a simple antagonist that was added just to make Shepard's life difficult. Him giving us only reasons to hate him is not something good about him. There is no way to symphesise with his character, he seem to stand for nothing, there is nothing about him. He's nothing more than a puppet for TIM, not a great character here. Even with reading the books, I don't find him an interesting character at all in the game. And that's sad, he was pretty cool in the books.

This is more or less what I think of him as well. In Retribution, he was quite intimidating and reflected such a powerful image for an antagonist. In subsequent media, i.e. Deception and ME3, he simply doesn't match. Frankly, it's like he's an attention hoo.

'Cause he's a terrible, terrible antagonist. All he does is run away. I sniggered at Shepard's insults during the final battle. What a waste of time and effort (if any were put into him).

it seems so, there was no need at all for anderson to mention grayson for example. The books do seem to fill in a lot of holes that they shouldnt really have to; like what kai leng was doing during ME1 / 2.

im currently playing through ME3 as a completely new game with a femshep, using the mindset that ive never played the other games and at many points im thinking 'this game makes NO sense unless you've played ME1+2' lol, as a standalone game theres too much going on unless you know.

I regard the hamster on the Normandy as more of an "old adversary" than Kai Leng. At least it's good at hiding.
I mean seriously "LOL I trolled you once now we're rivals." No Kai Leng, you are nothing. You are less than nothing. Nothing is reserved for characters 5 times as well written as you. Had you not lead to Thane's death I wouldn't even remember who you are!

good luck with that lol, I'd not be able to 'block out' the other games. Take into account charactor build and fetch stuff needed. All concerned, ME3 is/would be just plain weird. Come to think of it, that might be (one reason) why it got such player remorse that way?

I don't know what everyone's talking about, I thought he was a great villain, very believable. Especially with the buildup from deception.

I agree.
Kai Leng was great. A breath of fresh air and a clear indication, or foreshadow if you wish, where Bioware wants to go with their characters and storytelling techniques in future games. I can't wait!

Horribly written
Annoying voice
Cheesy fight mechanics
Reality warping anime reject
Coward
Only lives through incompetence from Shepard and plot armor.
Lame ass boss fight
Villain Sue of the highest most disgusting order
A ninja in a guns and tech setting.
Over talked about and bragged about without any skills to back it up.
Pathetic compared to Saren, Tela Vasir, or Harbinger (that says something)

Overall just a terribly written villain who only wins because Bioware cant write a competent villain anymore.

Compared to Death's Hand he really is just lame.
