I think the Mage-Templar war, MTW for short, should, and hopefully will, be based upon the Thirty Years War.
For those of you who don't know here is the wikpedia page:
http://en.wikipedia....irty_Years'_War
and the much shorter TvTropes page
http://tvtropes.org/.../ThirtyYearsWar
Basicly for thirty years mercenary armies fought thought out Germany for releigous and political reasons, namely how much power the Holy Roman Emperor could have, and they would come take all of the towns food, kill any who got in the way and then probebly burn it.
It would fit with the DA2 'both sides suck really bad' approch to story telling and would be a good template for a war such as what the MTW is.
Any what do you think?

A. I don't believe that both sides sucked really bad in DA2, and B. it's been said by Bioware that the mages were depicted as being unrealistically prone to insanity/abominationhood in DA2, so it won't be happening again in DA3. As I don't believe the templars were mentioned in that statement, make of that what you will.

I think Mage Templar War will be like Armageddon...
but, there is something in question...
1. what they both want to achieve? If it is a WAR, they both must have a goal. Not just creating chaos everywhere.
2. surely the war is not about nationality or religion, it is just about sentiment. It is because war that based on nationality and religion have a goal.
3. Templar want to eradicate all mages on the face of earth? For what? Mages will always be born, it is something not in Templar/Chantry control
4. Mages want freedom? Sure they can have. So fighting Templar always just for that? To what end?
So, everything is actually POLITICAL. Chantry/Templar despise mages not because of their religion, not because of magic...but because of TEVINTER IMPERIUM. It is not shown in the game, but there are hints everywhere. Mages are become a victim of hate crime because of Tevinter, the rest are propaganda and mischief on both side.
It is like War on Terror, USA declare war on Muslims because of Middle East, because of oil trade, because of monopoly on riches and political power over the world. Hate crimes against Muslims are just the effect of American propaganda, you can search that on internet and western media about it.
Mage vs Templar war is actually based on War on Terror and 9/11. Before 9/11, USA have series of war in the East, Gulf War, operation desert Storm and many more. USA also involve in Afghanistan, supplying the Mujahideen with Stinger to fight Russian. Now they invade Afghan...Iraq...
The Chantry/Templar FEAR Tevinter Imperium/Mages the same like USA/Europe FEAR Middle East/Muslims

I just hope they get back to the more balanced view of templars and mages that were depicted in DAO rather than the extremes of each that occurred in DA2.
In DAO I actually felt sorry for the templars as they appeared as much slaves of the Chantry as the mages were. They were addicted to a substance that was under control of the Chantry, like their charges they were denied a normal family life and ultimately appeared to suffer from premature dementia as a result of prolonged lyrium use. At times they were required to witness the possession of people they had come to like and were then forced to kill them. On the mages side, whilst I had intense sympathy for Jowan, we were at least shown why confining mages within the Circle had originally been considered necessary and not all mages were unhappy with their lot. We also had an apostate mage organisation, the Mages Collective, that was not hell bent on causing trouble and offered an alternative approach that might lead to better things.
In DAO I felt there were valid arguements on boths sides, whereas in DA2 it just seemed corrupt fanatical templars versus murderous insane mages, with the mage underground giving people more reason to fear mages than help them. If they make the templars the pantomime villains of DA3, I shall be very disappointed.

Actually, the mage underground consisted mostly of nonmage civilians, and only became problematic after it had been reduced to a few desperate people grabbing for any advantage that might help them survive. And even then, they weren't a threat to anyone innocent apart from Hawke's sibling, at least until Grace turned into an abomination.
Aside from that, the DAO templars didn't seem all that much better, with them casually talking about Jowan's impending Tranquility and one conversation about one not wanting to touch such "abominations" as the dead mages when cleaning up the Circle tower; then, of course, there's Rylock. All told, to me, DAO and DA2 templars seemed quite consistent in their portrayal, with the "bad" mages in DA2 being largely incidental threats having little to do with the Circle or that rebellion. In the end, it seems like it'd work just fine for the templars to serve as the main villains of DA3, with the PC debate being between the mages and Chantry.
