of course you don't, because it's the last game in the Shepard trilogy. it was almost the same thing with ME2, except you had to wait a while until you can continue your savegame in ME3....but there's no ME4 with Shepard in it. this is the case with a game that's best played AFTER all DLC has been released.
that's how I played ME2, I've had it on Steam for ages but never played it for some reason, though I bought all the DLC in the end and played it from beginning to end with no missing pieces. it was a helluva ride. but with ME3 I guess none of us could wait that long. so we played it, finished the trilogy and got Shepard blasted into oblivion either way (because let's face it, the breathing scene makes zero difference in YOUR personal savegame). now DLC is just more stuff in between. not much sense in playing bit by bit as it's released over time.
wish I had the ability to wipe my memory of any ME3 playthrough so I could play it all for the first time with every possible DLC.
