I'm currently replaying Mass 2, and experimenting with changing the difficulty settings of certain missions in order to improve the overall experience of a trilogy playthrough.  (I normally play on Hardcore.)

Here is my plan.  I've played most of the game on Veteran difficulty.  This is to reflect that most of the enemies you encounter are not frontline troops.  Shepard is able to crash through them like Seal Team Six versus the Republican Guard.

Every time I face the geth, I crank it back up to Hardcore.  These forces are the robot death machines of the trilogy, and combat with them is real warfighting.

On every Collector mission I ramp it up to Insanity, which I find to normally be a tedious grind.  However, chipping away at their superior shields with ineffectual weapons while cowering from their deadly death rays really reflects the tech disadvantage Shep would be facing.

On Jacob's loyalty mission I just set the difficulty to Casual.  It feels like it should - a wicked, bloody massacre through a primitive tribe and some obsolete mechs.  By the time my Shepard reached Ronald Taylor she was disgusted at what he'd made her do.

I was surprised at how much tweaking the difficulty setting affected my experience of the game.  For your next replay I recommend trying it.  :)

I beat the Collecter Ship with the Praetorian once on Insanity and I never plan on doing it again. SO frustrating.

Nice idea, Zaysh. I'll definately try it.

Going on to ME3, I'd see that as fun as well.

The Rannoch arc would remain Hardcore for the reasons you said: the Geth are the war machines, and should be pretty consistent.

Cerberus missions would be almost uniformly Insanity difficulty: reflecting the mix of raw Reaper technology with the special-forces skill.

Reaper missions would have the most  variety: Reaper ground forces tend towards relying more in terms of numbers than technology (bar their elite units), but I could see them having 'more advanced' troops for more important missions. Missions that aren't on the front lines (most side missions) would be of Veteran difficulty: mass-produced husks and such from inferior bodies. Front line forces, mainly the campaign missions, would be Hardcore to show a high-intensity warfare. The most important of Reaper missions, however, break out the best forces for Insanity: Sanctuary (a high-prioirty target for the Reapers) and Earth (for the climatic finale).
