I enjoyed Dragon Age II a lot. Although I got a little bored going through the same places, it was still a lot of fun and I liked Hawke and co. I own the collector's edition/Ultimate Edition disc but haven't played them yet. Is it worth playing? I'm not a hardcore RPG fan, but it didn't look like it required a lot of "maintanence" so to speak.

DA2 is quite a bit different than DAO, which is in part why a lot of people (not me) dislike it. The protagonist doesn't speak (except in battle), the dialogue doesn't use different tones to indicate intent, you start off the story with multiple origin stories, the combat is a fair bit slower and "less flashy," and the art direction changed quite a bit.

Were these changes for the better? A year's worth of angry back-and-forth bickering on these forums has failed to reach any substantive conclusion, though most agree that DA2 suffered from a lack of polish.

If you liked DA2 and want to involve yourself in the franchise, then you really must play DAO at some point, even if you never make it past Ostagar (an early critical point in the story). It is, technically speaking, the better game; there's more varieties with environments and monsters, the game is longer and DAO doesn't suffer from the lack of direction that DA2 sometimes had. The goal is clear: defeat the darkspawn and save the world. It might be a predictable goal, but it's still a good one.

Thanks, I'll definitely give it a shot then. I've only recently got into RPGs like Dragon Age. I'm playing through Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings as I type this and I'm completely blown away. I wish I'd started playing games like this sooner.

Mass Effect was my first RPG pretty much at all. Then I borrowed Oblivion from a friend, played for about five minutes and quit because of the zombies...came back later and bullied through and then had 118 hours before I gave it back. Then I got Dragon Age. It was amazing. What I loved the most was the roleplaying part of it--I could honestly say to myself:

"Alright, I'm rp-ing a mage who sees the uses for the Circle but can also distinguish between true abominations and just mages who don't want to be part of the Circle. Also, he's a bit of a jerk but deep down cares about people"

And actually play it out in-game. It wasn't just some "headcanon" I made up--the game allowed me to play the character.

Although you can't roleplay a mage who wants to abolish the Circle altogether, or offer any sympathy to those who want to do so. Or oppose the templars or Chantry in any way. There are still limits, the limits are just in different places.

I preferred Origins.

I came to like Dragon Age II eventually, but I maintain that Origins is a far superior game.

Good god, yes. It's quite different from DA2 though, might need some getting used to.

I would be able to understand if you don't like DA:O right away,I know I certainly didn't.But I looked past the combat, learned to love it,and immersed myself in an epic fantasy game with a great story and characters(FYI The companions are WAY better in Origins).DA2 was meh...Also if your getting into RPG games try Demon/Dark Souls,The Elder Scrolls and Fallout series, and of course the older Bioware Games like Baldur's Gate and Knights of the Old Republic.

I kinda liked DA2, I think it is a good game...

But DAO? I love it. I play it even now, so many years after release, and enjoy it. Of course some things might come as a "culture shock" if you know only games like DA2 or the later Mass Effect games, with their "visceral" combat and voiced protagonists...

But if you can look past those things you get a remarkable game with a lot of depth. Ferelden, the wardens, the blight and darkspawn, all this makes this game far superior story-wise than DA2, which often left me rather confused about why and what and whoever was this etc...

DAO is old-school RPG...and this means it has some rough edges, and these edges make the game unique and worth replaying many times over, at least for me.

And I really hope DA3 will have at least some elements of DAO back, and only take the few better things of DA2 (voiced protagonists for example)...

If there's one thing I can appreciate in a game, it's the detail they put into the story and world that was created. While Dragon Age 2 didn't have too much of that, form what you guys have said Dragon Age: Origins has a lot of that. I'm really excited to play it now.

Mages Collective. Blood mage during "A Broken Circle." Magi boon. Nuff said.

You will like DAO a lot, is a good game but be aware that the combat system sucks darkspawn balls.
