Hi all,
just wanted to share how I feel about the ending and the major plotholes !
The Citadel was created to solve a problem that really is or is believed to be inevitable: The Organic vs Synthetic conflict.
As
pointed out in ME3, synthetics are created to satisfy the demands of
organics. Because these demands are increasing with time and technology,
synthetics must eventually be allowed to evolve. They inevitably
surpass their organic masters and an inevitable conflict arises. It is
irrelevant for us to know if the conflict really is inevitable, because
the creators created the Catalyst anyway. The Catalyst being an AI,
it may believe as truth what it is programmed to believe as truth.
One
can see the Citadel/Catalyst as the solution to the organico-synthetic
problem. At the time of its construction, the Citadel already
incorporates the 3 solutions we are so familiar with: Synthesis,
creation of and control over the Catalyst, and destruction of
synthetics.
The Crucible is nothing but a power source ! It is not
necessary to know about the Catalysts existence to design such a
thing. (As we will see soon)
However it is very likely that the
Creators did not fully trust AI's and wanted to protect themselves, thus
keeping certain functions of the Citadel (which is a damn important
device) out of the Catalysts reach: In a similar fashion as with
Prothean beacons, some functions of the Citadel can only be used by
organics. Some important functions even need the intervention of a free
willed (not controlled) organic: synthesis.
All throughout the
Mass effect series, the Reapers/Catalyst can only accomplish important
functions of the Citadel with the intervention of organics: Reapers had
to rely on the keepers to recieve the "OK" signal and to use the Citadel's
hidden relay function. The same can be said about the Citadels arms.
Without an organic to help, the Catalyst cannot open or close the
Citadel arms as he pleases. ( would be pretty dangerous to allow him
such privilege) Once Protheans messed up the keepers hidden program,
Sovereign had to rely on another organic, Saren, to do the keepers' job.
This
may explain why the Reapers did not attempt to take control of the
Citadel at the very start of ME3. Since they do not control the arms of
the citadel without organic help, and since no organic at their disposal
was able to open citadel arms (why is a matter of interpretation), it
would be pretty risky for the Reapers to attack the citadel. The
inhabitant organics could just close the Citadel arms and keep the
Reapers out. Giving other organics time to prepare for the war.
Hearing
Vigil (Prothean VI in ME1) one could also fantasize that the keepers
are the CREATORS of the catalyst/Citadel and were forced to become the
very first Reaper. The keepers do not appear as free willed organics.
They were altered in such ways as to mindlessly follow the
Catalysts/Reapers' program. As the codex states, keepers will instantly
liquify and die if organics try to mess up with them. (Only the
Protheans are known to have overcome this trap without triggering the
self destruct program). Mindless keepers ensure that critical parts of
the Citadel remain under their control and watch, and that other
organics do not discover the purpose of the Citadel.
When the
Catalyst tells Shepard that he had to force the Creators to become a
Reaper, it is obvious that the AI (by itself or organic help) managed to
take control over its creators/keepers. (How? Bioware knows ) Possibly,
some of the remaining "free willed" creators, in hopes someone would
stop the Catalyst, managed to pass on the plans of the Crucible to other
organics.
Does this make sense to you?
