I'm sticking with the theory that the survivor is the deserter in the cage
Wow, I forgot about him. I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out he's the survivor.

Maybe it's the Ash Warrior leader (unless you run into him later and I just didn't)

What I REALLY hope is that it's not "Dog". Didn't they say you get a second chance to recruit Dog for the Return to Ostagar DLC? I hope they're not considering him "the survivor" that would be a bummer.

I've got my fingers crossed for the survivor to be Davareth.
You mean Daveth the guy who dies in the Joining?
I'm still curious how they knew he was gonna die so quickly and that you were gonna survive....
They sure jump to conclusions (I mean rightly so) fast with Daveth. But you pass out .....so I mean you don't think it would be that easy to tell.
(ps they should have lied to Jory and said he was just sleeping).

I like the theory that the deserter survived; maybe the darkspawn didn't realize he was there. And he was just too skinny to eat, right?
We already know there are survivors of Ostagar other than this person from the DLC. There's Loghain, Wynne, Ser Cauthrien, Alistair, and the PC. If you recruit him via the quest, there's also Dog. Incidentally, to answer someone above, if you read the questions thread in the general forum, one of the developers said that no, we will not get two mabari. Disappointing, I know. That would've been awesome. Maybe you could've even had a mabari puppy later.

Seriously, the only person who could survive would be Sandal's twin...

what would be interresting is if Duncan was not slain by the Hurlock, but actually knocked out, dragged underground, and undergone some male broodmother sick experiment, that goes wrong. He flies into a mindless rage, slaughtering darkspawn as he finds his way to Orzammar...he smashes into Orzammar easily, creating a new questline to help the wounded and save Orzammar from total destruction. You can choose not to, which results in Orzammars fall.
Duncan the Destroyer reaches the surface and begins a new age for Thedas and Darkspawn alike. The Duncan Age. Through his 'broodmother' capabilities he rapes any woman in his path to give birth to a new, better, faster, stronger, and smarter breed of Darkspawn....DUNCANSPAWN.
Eventually the Duncan Blight has spread far and wide, leaving the Grey Wardens useless since Duncan already had the original darkspawn taint. So you start a NEW pact...the Wardens(No stupid color thing). You start a new storyline that holds countless epic battles(Where you're NOT sent off to some lame errand that has a miraculous and practically impossible twist)aswell as more romances, more dungeons, more companions...and most important of all...you get to know about Morrigans child, as she returns(Either cause she feels you'll need her help, or cause she misses you too much, depending on how you ended the game with her).
In the end, you get a difficult choice. You realize Duncan has kept some of his human memories, but a new and broader understanding of the taint. That it's possibilities are barely even scraped at the top! You can choose to put him out of his missery, resulting in a battle of agelessly epic proportions that outshines the archdemon fight. OR you can side with him, and accept his gift...to drink his blood. You become a fearsome general for Overlord Duncan the Destroyer, in his quest to annihilate all that he once pledged his life to protect, in order to begin a better, more perfect world, but where Blood Magic is abundant, and the capital will be the Tevinter Imperium, returning it to its former glory!
In all this...Alistair will agree with you. His deep sorrow from losing his only true father figure sends him spiralling into madness as he sees what his mentor and idol has become. He will either join you as your first officer in Duncans army, or fight you to the death to protect his tutor and friend.
What happens next can be played in continuously released expansions, with new twists to the story...maybe Morrigans child is more important than s/he seemed to be?

When you posess The Beard, Chuck Norris is minute in comparison to your own power.

Read all of it...and Bioware should really consider hiring you as a writer, the Duncan Age awaits:lol:...
