So, I just finished a playthrough with my rogue. First, let me say this was played on normal. That being said, this build raped face on normal. I'm pretty confident that this build would hold up on nightmare. I could (and arguably should) have gone with assasin instead of duelist, but vendetta was too appealing. It was definitely worth it too. This build is centered around guaranteed criticals, so I focused on cunning to take advantage.
Attributes:
When I finished the game, I had 13 willpower, 39 dexterity (just enough for my dagger), and 57 cunning. This gave 80% critical chance from the front, and 100% from behind and vs. stunned. And, of course, massive criticals.
Abilities:
I won't go into detail about what level to get every ability. Obviously, there is a lot of room for play. I'll take a look at the key abilities that made my build.
Dual Weapon
Honestly, I barely touched this tree. I picked up Backstab and Unforgiving Chain right away of course. I ended up taking Explosive Strike late-game, but could have done without. You could also grab it earlier if it pleases.
Sabotage
Miasmic Flask. Duh.
Specialist
I picked up Speed, Precision, and Precise Attack. I never got around to making it to Harmony. I honestly didn't miss it. I played in Precision the whole game. Early, this will help increase critical chance. Since my build is focused on cunning instead of dexterity, the attack chance is a godsend the whole game. I was able to stack crit gear only, and keep my attack at near 100% with minimal dex.
Scoundrel
This is all about Twist the Knife and Follow-through. Since I dumped willpower, Follow-through keeps my abilities ready to use at all times. Twist the Knife allows for auto-crit vs. stunned enemies. Very useful, especially before you get auto-crit from behind.
Subterfuge
Stealth (of course) and Evade. The dead rogue puts out the lowest dps of any rogue. These two abilities will ensure you live to see victory. I picked up Ambush, but if I had it to do all over again, it would be skipped. It will become obsolete later on, and I didn't get much use out of it before that point.
Shadow
I picked up Shadow at level 7. I took every ability in this tree, but no upgrades. Honestly, I didn't find the upgrades necessary enough to warrant a talent point. It's really just about picking up these passives. Pinpoint Precision gives +50% crit damage (that's what we're focusing on, remember?), Disorienting Criticals gives another +50% when obscured (plus disorient), and Predator gives 100% critical chance when flanking. Combined with Twist the Knife, this will pretty much guarantee you critical hits. Even when attacking from the front, critical chance will still be decent. Decoy helps with survivability.
Duelist
I picked up all of the abilities except the two passives, and took the En Garde and Blood Feud upgrades. Between massive cunning and the duelist bonuses, my rogue boasted impressive defense. I had 80% defense (with parry) at the end of the game. Note that Throw the Gauntlet gives an additional +20%. Vendetta is the heavy-hitter of this build. I was hitting for around 3500 with Vendetta. Backstab was good for another 1-1.5k.
In terms of playstyle, it was pretty simple. Find the biggest threat on the battlefield, and decimate it. Lieutenants, Commanders, and mages are prime targets. Once you have your threat identified, pop off a Vendetta. If that doesn't kill it, Backstab. If that doesn't kill it, sneeze on it. Having the toughest enemy on the battlefield dropped in the first few seconds of the fight made the fights cake. Between Vendetta, Backstab, Miasmic Flask, and flanking criticals, you can pretty much just mow everything down. Back to Back helps you quickly adjust your position on the battlefield.
Finally, let me just say that I know this isn't the optimal build. This isn't a build that was designed and perfected for nightmare. However, not only did I mow through normal, I auto-leveled my companions, and didn't even set up tactics. All I'm saying is that the build works well and was tons of fun, though there are more uber builds out there.
I mostly ran with Aveline, Fenris, and Anders, though pretty much any combination could have worked. I do recommend at least Aveline to keep you from getting swarmed. When I fought Orsino, Fenris and Anders actually died pretty quick because I wasn't paying attention. Having Aveline there was a big help, since I didn't have to worry too much about her health, and was free to let her tank him.
