It's going to be at least a year and a half away. DLCs are still coming. If they add in new enemies and maps and weapons, plenty more to go I think.

But I did stop playing Mortal Kombat 9 as soon as they stop with DLC support.  So I think for me, it might die as soon as new contents stops.

I mean, if the company stop supporting it, why should I as a gamer bother with?  Like a TV show, it's over then it's over.

I'm not so much concerned about when they will stop supporting it with DLC. I enjoy it enough already. I just don't want things to suddenly be gone when the servers are eventually shut down.

There are plenty of games that have offline MP, including Gears of War 3 which uses the same engine.

No matter what happens to the servers, you'll always have what you've unlocked in Gears of War. Factor that in with the store system in ME3 that makes unlocks even harder to get, it would be nice to know that everything won't just be gone one day in the blink of an eye.

How about with the next multiplayer Mass Effect game:

Maxing levels for all Uncommon items in ME3 gives you a special gear for ME4 Multiplayer
Maxing levels for all Rare items gives you a special weapon for ME4 Multiplayer
25 Ultra rare Unlocks in ME3 and you receive a special character in ME4

These special unlocks should not suck, btw, and are Level X. This way, your time spent on ME3 was not wasted, there would be more motivation for people to continue playing ME3 to complete these requirements, these rewards take enough effort to justify making the special equipment actually good.

Once ME3's lifecycle ends, I move to PC and balance the game as I see fit.

Some crackin and some hamachi and it'll be good to go.

Wouldn't expect anything less from you SeaJay, :D

By the way, we need to get some Platinum runs in together soon.

Well, I know Red Dead Redemption still has  a healthy multi base.  That game has been out for a while.  This game's multiplayer will live long enough to the point of the next Mass Effect game.  So, I give it till the xbox 720 release.

The awesome part....... Hopefully, bioware will be able to nail down the kinks in the online code and eliminate them with the next release.

I've been a little harsh in my assessments, but I know the programmers are learning a lot from this game and SWTOR.  I  anticipate the next multiplayer experience to parallel what bioware has done for the RPG genre in general.

With that said, I've put more time in on this game's multiplayer than any other game....... including SWTOR and RDR.

Probably.

The only thing that worries me is that EA has a habit of pullinge the plug on online games when the player numbers start to dip. They've shut down some online games after only a year, although those cases are rare.

It would just be nice to know that BioWare had something in place for after ME3's run in the online world.

Near future: every weapon is as powerful as Avenger and only players left are the ones who will keep posting "AVENGER IS TOO OP PLEASE NERF".

Have fun.

If ever they take down the MP servers, I'd greatly appreciate it if Bioware replaced it with (for example) a LAN feature, or something with dedicated hosts, allowing us to connect to specific hosts directly using their IP.
Outsourcing to some other company dedicated specifically to hosting older MP games could be an option too, license them to run a server for some monthly/yearly fee, let that company figure out how to make money with the service (advertisements, subscriptions, whatever)

Indeed.

I was mid-match and about to sign-off when you sent me an invite the other night.

It's been awhile, man.

From what i can say from my own experience when EA closes shop, they close it for good, a good example would be Earth And Beyond, people who spent money on it lost everything. Despite the fanbase making an emulation to run it, you lost everything you had since the servers on EA's end stored everything, also the emulator is a rather fantastic but a fringe operation at the same, ran by massive monetary backing from the fans.

Though it is not an ideal example, another case to look at is 'the saboteur' .

When the game came out new owners got a code to enable nudity in the game(could also be a dlc purchase). When they shut down the servers associated with the game that content locked by default on all machines.

How that carries over here is the fact that when the multiplayer servers die, not only will you lose all the weapons etc, you will also lose the ability to raise galactic readiness above 50 percent which may be a kick in the teeth for some going to replay the game down the line.

This is exactly why I started this thread and group.

EA has a habit of shutting games down completely and I really don't want that to happen to ME3. Especially with how hard it is to just be able to unlock everything due to the RNG.

What i'm more concerned about is how we'll be able to improve Galactic Readiness.
Will they permanently fix it to 100%? Or even remove it and just have OMS instead of EMS?

Both are reasonable options, although I would rather be able to play for it with an offline mode.

IIRC, even if that's an issue, you can just edit your war assets in the same game editor/coalesced.

EA will give me tree free months of XBL Gold, 400 MS Points, and a beta invite to the next ME game.

Reference to this.

I remember that. Even though I played Halo 2 during  the last few months on my original GT, I never got those rewards, lol.

Didn't bother me, I was just playing it because I loved Halo 2.

I would love for some input on this from Bioware.

I highly enjoy ME3's MP and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. But there's always a few nagging questions in the back of my head:

What happens when the servers are finally shut down?

Seeing as everything including our unlocks are stored on the servers, does it all become lost?

My hope is that Bioware will put out a patch near the end of the game's MP life that will allow us to download everything we've unlocked to our Xboxes and be able to either play solo offline or with friends through system link.

Even though it's still early on in ME3's MP life, it would be nice if Bioware could shed some light on this subject. I know it would make me feel a bit better about all of the work I've put into this game and I'm sure it will for some of you as well.

Thanks for reading.

It is rather odd that this game's multiplayer can't be played offline or even with bots when you look at games like Gears of War 2 and 3 and Unreal Tournament 3. This game runs on the same engine as those games (Unreal Engine 3), so Bioware can't use the "it can't be done" defence that so many of this generation's game developers just love to use.

It's an excuse for always on DRM.
