This, a million times. I actually play neraly every class combo, constantly trying different setups for fun/challenge.
It is a huge pain when I am playing with friends and want to switch classes for better synergy, but have to skill out characters while they wait for me in lobby.

So I'm tired of all the threads going off in rants about how n7 is worthless and is no indicator of skill and how people that kick low n7 players are retarded.
So I've a better question; what is the point of playing with level 20 characters?
You waste exp, your overpowered character makes everything too easy and stale so it can't be for fun, the only logical answer would be to grind for credits, and if that is the sole reason you play, you may as well grind fbwgg all day... so the only reason you don't promote and watch how you get closer to 20k warassets (and closer to your secret ending) is to grind for credits in a behavior that many games have used to trap and sometimes kill people with questionable mental health...
Well good job in unlocking all the game has to offer (or breaking lots of crap in fits of rage because you are almost over 9000 level 4 consumables), how does it feel to know you are playing this game, for no reason other than a false sense of accomplishment? because you surely ain't doing it for fun.
--------------
To me nothing beats changing playstyles as you level up; is great to play the asari vanguard sniper at level 1 and then switch to asari cqc with a claymore at level 10.
Adjusting your playstyle as you level up, and trying new builds from scratch is as much fun or funner than playing on the casino roulette and somehow win 5 times in a row, because odds say you won't have any fun, when you get a level 4 cryo ammo instead of the demolisher you wanted.
Aka I play like I want to play, and you do the same.

Wrong. A level 5 soldier carrying a Sabre X performs way better than a level 20 soldier carrying an Avenger X or even a Geth Pulse Rifle, especially if the level 20's tactics are limited to stand still and empty the full clip into anything that moves.

Ranking up a currently pointless number does nothing for you.
Promote until you feel you have an adequate amount of SP assets, then stop, unless an operation requires it.
That's the way to do it with the most reason, although people can do what they please.

You're wrong...a level 20 soldier carrying a Saber X is better than a level 5. If the mission fails or someone wastes MORE SUPPLIES because of that, it is your fault. I'm not saying that there are not acceptable risks nor am I saying that the player has to be level 20, but it is a team decision, it has an effect on everyone...don't get mad if they don't want to take the risk.

I have a lot of friends that promote characters frantically because they don't want to waste the XP, or they like to experiment with builds as they level up, or they're trying to reach the top places on the leaderboards. I used to promote every time I reached level 20, until it got boring, so I stopped on N7 1200. On gold I can use a lot of characters, so there's no risk of being fed up with playing always the same way. On platinum I use a more restricted array of characters, I still couldn't make some of them work, but this difficulty is more intense, still fun.
As for the 20.000 war assets... It's not like we could defeat the Reapers with them...

But the thread states NOBODY should play level 20, when it is the opposite in many cases and bad for the team in many. Teams can take risks for whatever fun, but it is a team decision. You are right that a good weapon on a lower level char can often do better than a high level char with a crappy weapon...it's a tradeoff people might be willing to take. But you will win absolutely NO points arguing against people playing level 20, it's just futility because many of us don't enjoy crippled characters when we've already done it...we want challenges, but not by devolving.

I can not beat a game of platinum with N7300s and N7400s. I wish there are other ways to register a player's skill level. Like how many times they beat certain game mode, or such. I would like to play with experienced follow Platinum players with high success ratio.

What I do is just have one level 20 character (my favorite most versatile class), and ill constantly promote all the other ones and busually leave 1 character at level 20 so i can do my golds and plats while still having fun leveling the others up.
I dont necessarily care about my N7 level, but Ill admit if im in a lobby for Gold or Plat me and my friends will kick anyone whose N7 is too low. The only way to put yourself appart from the new players is by raising your N7, because most of the time people wont really look at your weapon or equipment before kicking. If you want to be taken seriously just raise your level...its not hard.
The best players are the ones that can hang in harder difficulties with low level characters. Having to always be lvl 20 makes you worse than a player that constantly plays at lower levels in my opinion. The more you play with a weak character, the more you learn to keep your butt out of the fire. The level 20s that never promote are the ones that wander off by themselves and think theyre invincible, because they forget (or never learned) how to keep themselves out of line of fire.

A high N7 doesn't make someone a great player.
A low N7 doesn't make someone a bad player.
High level guns doesn't make someone a good player.
Low level guns doesn't make someone a bad player.
This has been debated since the game came out. My 178 N7 with my Phalanx VII has beaten a 2000+ N7 with Black Widow X in score. Someone's skill is based upon just that, their skill, and until you play with them, you can't judge them accurately. I've had a 120 N7 carry my team through a Plat. run. I've had a 3000 N7 carry my team through a Plat run. N7 means nothing.

The N7 level doesnt necessarily matter, but it's a means to weed the new players from the old. Seperate the good from the bad. Whether you dont want to be associated with the bad players because of your N7 is a moot point. You either level up and show youre a great player so you dont get mistaken for the bad players, or you deal with being judged by your low level N7 rating.
A player that stays at level 20 from the beginning and shows no drive to raise their N7 doesnt really mean theyre a bad player by any means. But lets say i'm taking Ninjitsu classes and you start with a White belt and end with a Black belt. If Im experienced enough to wear the Black belt, but I CHOOSE to wear the white belt because the belt color isnt important (cause im still leet), then its your fault people look at you and say, "Eh, white belt is scrub..." and dont give you the time of day.

Agreed. My N7 is 600 and has been for quite some time now, and I have a friend who's N7 is around 150. He usually plays better than most 1000+ players, and can easily run gold (and plat with some difficulty, but we still love 'em). The old adage "age is nothing but a number" seems to apply to the N7 rank as well...
Gear does help alot, however skill and teamwork is what really makes it count in the end. Usually I'll play at least 1 match with a person before making any sort of judgement call, playing with them is the only true way to "measure" skill. Personally I get alot of flack when I use certain weapons that other people may not like (i.e. Eagle, PR etc.), but usually once those people see how it can be useful on a class they perhaps didn't think of using it on, it's all good.

While this is usually true, the players judging are often only hurting themselves and missing out on gaining decent or excellent players just because they glanced at a number. This has happened to me several times, and I admitedly feel a twinge of fear when a low N7 enters a gold or plat match. However, my moment of prejudice is often proven unwarranted and more often than not, they can hold their own and then some.

I perfect my playstyle with each character and play gold and platinum.
Playing gold at less than level 20 is doable, but hard. Platinum? No chance, you need every advantage you can get.
Since i play to get credits, not experience, it works for me. I play lots of bronze before i get to level 20, so theres a lot of time to learn whats good with a character.
Theres also not much point if the way to play certain characters(like vanguards) is basically the same. My Asari vanguard and krogan vanguard basically use the exact same playstyle, one is just craploads tougher. My batarian Sentinel and Paladin basically use the same style too, one just has more suitable powers for close range. Adepts are pretty much all the same, except the justicar. Soldiers...are soldiers. Engineers are always best suited for support, although the salarian one is very common on higher difficulties. Infiltrators have 3 variations. Close range probably with geth plasma shotgun, long range sniper, or the N7 shadow, which either destroys everything with electric slash or shadow strike, or both.
Theres not a huge amount of variation in the playstyles even then. If i can do platinum, pretty much anyone can.

I DON'T like having a weakened character that cannot hold its own if need be.
I don't wanna run around with a lvl 1 Human Soldier that can't do jack squat!!! And no, a good weapon can NOT make a good character...the character needs to have something to it as well.
