hey i have found the book in the main quest and my quest log says i found a map through caridins cross to the death trenches but i just cant find it, it is a bug or am i just stupid ?

From Caridin's Cross, you have to head to Ortan Thaig, then go to the Dead Trenches. Also, the places only show up if you exit through a specific exit. For example, Ortan Thaig won't show up unless you take the south exit out of Caridin's Cross.

No, you're not stupid. There are several exits that can be missed if you're not very diligent in searching for them. Just be patient and use your map wisely. Going round and round in circles can disorient you.
