(Spoilers for the book Asunder)

So in Asunder we see the Character of Cole who is a Spirit or Demon or whatever who did not know he was actualy one.  I think if done right that could be a mind blowing plot twist. One to rival you being Revan in KOTOR.  If they were able to do it and really surprise us with it...  Damn that would be great.

I LOVE this idea!

I'd like it if the player was able to choose what type of demon/spirit they wanted to be and it was a class system that came with it's own abilities/weaknesses.

As for the next protagonist as a spirit demon, meh.

If so however, I wouldn't make it so simple as choosing what spirit or demon and class. It would mean so much more to the story if the resulting spirit or demon and class came from the player's choices up to the moment when the spirit/demon manifested, an event that wouldn't happen in the prologue or first act IMHO -- maybe at the finale of the first act or later.

If a person is greedy, desire. If a person does the bare minimum required to move the story along, sloth. Unnecessary killing, rage. Pride, being the strongest and unbalancing, is a wash (especially since it would be difficult to portray in a game). Spirits such as justice, valor, compassion (sounds like Ultima) would likewise have player actions over the prologue and 1st+ acts to decide. In the end, it would be the quality that the character exhibits the most from the start of the game that would determining the spirit/demon1. The class of the demon/spirit could come from how the player upgrades their character until the manifestation.

Each demon and spirit would have their strengths and weaknesses as proposed, but not making any of them better or worse than the others, but requiring different styles of playing.

Letting the player simply choose the demon/spirit and class is just bland. Let them earn what they want.

Also allowing the player to choose destroys the OP's idea of making it a twist ala "You are Revan" from KotOR.  I actually like the idea; your character goes through the game developing new mysterious abilities as they level up and towards the end of the game (end of the 2nd Act perhaps) your true nature is revealed.  I wouldn't get into the specific types of demons/spirits too much (don't necessarily establish the PC as Rage/Desire/Sloth/Compassion/Valor/Justice/etc.) just establish that they are a spirit or demon of great to middling power (devs choice).
