I think one of the devs made a joke at one point that the dwarven women were off taking care of the horses.

There's a difference between the lack of a scarcely-mentioned animal and the lack of half of a sentient species, especially when said half was shown to be just as active in the world as the other half in the previous game.

I think there was even one quest in DA2 that appeared if Nathaniel was dead where you had to save two sons of a dwarf in Hightown who had wandered down into the deep roads. His wife appeared, and was an elf. When this was the only married dwarf we saw, this carried the incorrect implication that dwarven women didn't even exist, as if they were wiped from the face of Thedas by the same act of the maker that made Qunari look tougher, elves uglier, and darkspawn weaker.

So clearly, the dwarven women were yet another casualty of DA2's rushed production schedule. Since it seems like they're putting more time in for DA3, though, they should return (and bring the Kossith women with them, too, please?). So they're not dead, just taking a vacation. Or they all died right next to the Urn of Sacred Ashes.

What is this thing with female dwarves? David said midget romance options would not be implemented in future entries and I couldn't agree more, too awkward.

I don't understand why David's so against dwarf romances. Okay, he doesn't like Dwarves, that's fine, but a lot of people do, especially if the dwarve's someone like Varric. Why bar people from having romances with them because of your own dislike?

IIRC he said he found the height comparison between a dwarf and a child to be unsettling.

I don't recall him saying there would never be dwarven romances (after all, you could play a dwarf in DAO and have a romance...), just that he, personally, was uncomfortable about them.

That has no bearing on female dwarves not being around at all though. As far as I know he never said he doesn't like dwarves.

I think the real reason is resources. That is, the more different models shown on the screen, the more resources are required by the game. Not sure if this is entirely accurate though.

I think you're right.  It's really too bad it's like that :(

Doesn't explain why Bioware told fans that Turian females got left out of ME1, because they ran out of time. Doesn't explain why they didn't make it into the two sequels.

Yes it does, actually. Assuming it's accurate, of course.

Having female turians appearing in any given scene is one more model they have to design and place at the expense of some other resource. The same logic, again if accurate, would apply to the two other games as well.

After all the Varric and Sigrun love, I'm hoping we'll get to see some more dwarves in DAIII. Especially women!
And I know this isn't a topic about dwarf lovin', but it's interesting to me that the developers are careful to be super inclusive of romances for every gender (which, you know - right on), but somehow giving us an LI who might be significantly shorter than us? Unheard of! That's too disgusting and awkward for words!
So tell that to Alistair, who said he loved my dwarven commoner "especially" because she's a dwarf. Or to my RL husband who's 15 inches taller than I am.  Posted Image

Sorry if there were any misunderstandings about my previous post - I'm new to DA and hadn't kept track of developer quotes so I was genuinely curious.

But anyway! Yes, female dwarves for the next game please? I played ME and it was unsettling that there weren't females of many other species running around. Or... well, loitering I suppose, but at least they had never appeared in the first instalment to be taken away in the second.

It's kind of lame to right race females out due to lore. Always seemed like a cop out to me. Why is it always other race females, but never human females?

Mass Effect series

-Krogan females never leave their camps
-Salarian females never leave their homeworld
-Turian females should have been numerous, but never apeared
-never heard about or saw female Drell, Batarians, Volus etc

Dragon Age series

-Qunari females never leave their island
-No female Darkspawn, only Broodmothers
-Dwarf females MIA in DA2 for no real reason

The rather gross and unpleasant implication is that Bioware doesn't think making models for females of these races is necessary, because they are not conventionally attractive, and thus not worthy of being a part of their games.

If this isn't accurate, I'd love to be proven wrong.  After seeing how the ME3 devs spent more time modelling boobs and cameltoe for a computer program than they did on making a face for Tali, I'm just a bit jaded.

Sigrun is a personal fave of mine though to be fair she could have been done in any gender or race and likely would have been as awesome, having said that i'd love to see female dwarves again but if they're just there for dressing and being awesome I can understand why they're not really put as a priority for inclusion.

@syllogi thats certainly one way of twisting logic into making outrageous claims.

I freely admit it's a cynical view of their reasoning for excluding females of certain races from their games, but I don't see it as outrageous, especially since they seem to support my view, at least regarding female turians and other less mammalian species:

… and [the turians] are all males in the game. We usually try to avoid the females — cause what do you do with a female turian? Add breasts, what do you do? Add lipstick on her?”
[/i]

Why would they feel that breasts and lipstick are *needed*, unless they are most concerned with making females conventionally attractive?

Again, I'd really love it if the Dragon Age team proves me wrong, and brings back female dwarves and introduces female kossith, regardless of whether they meet our standards of female beauty.

It's sad that I have seen fan art of female Turians, that has no problem making them look female, without adding breasts or lipstick. If fans can do this, why can't Bioware artist?!

Because 10000 encounters every night is more important than a whole half of a race?

I don't have DA:O DLC, but if you mean the dwarf and elf at hightown, the dwarf missing 3 sons, one of them is dead in the deep roads...that elf woman is his wife???? OMGLOL I thought she is his servant

i think that quest have no relation with DA:O DLC, and i import save from DA:O, i play that quest in ACT 2.

Dwarf + Elf....LOL

I suppose in a somewhat half-hearted defence of Bioware there was such a small number of dwarven NPC's as a whole in DA:2 it probably wasn't worth the time and effort. Especially not considering time was so obviously limited (There were many more important things than Females of one species that were rushed/unfinished).

I'm hoping that the Dwarves will play a larger role in DA:3 as a whole, because Orzammar was one of my favourite locations in DA:O. There is another Dwarven city isn't there, that just happens to be near Orlais? Make it happen Bioware! And include female Dwarfs this time too!

It would be nice to visit Kal Sharok, as DA2 was missing an "Orzammar", though it would be awkward only seeing dwarven men there.

Kal'Sharok would be interesting, i wonder if they transformed into inbred troglodytes considering what the codex hinted at?

On the subject of female dwarf characters, I'd love to see more genuine warrior women in the games. Why does every woman have to be a supermodel holding a sword? I loved Aveline because she didn't fit that mold of some bimbo who held a sword.

Would love to see some dwarf women tough like that, even if it does fit stereotypes on all dwarfs...

I am a huge supporter of the inclusion of female dwarves in DA3. Bioware made way too many cutbacks in DA2. The complete absence of female dwarves was one example of that. Companions should be more diverse. If skyrim was able to make female versions of all their races, why can't Bioware? Also, I feel that the next game should either allow a kossith romance or dwarf. Varric wasway more interesting than Anders and Fenris.

All I have to say is that if Bioware really wanted to attain and ensure the approbation of their fans for the future series, they need to acknowledge the fact that their fans derived much delight in having female dwarfs from DAO (and they can thank/blame themselves for that ^_^) that fans will continue to view the lack thereof as nothing more than skimping and personal preference on their part.

Besides, consensus has shown that everyone would be willing and happier to wait much longer for next release.    :D

Wait, what? There were no female dwarves in DA2? I.. I can't believe I never noticed that...

Sigrun was awesome in awakening! I hope she at least makes a cameo in DA3.

Actually now that you mention it, I think a super girly/fussy/giggly lady dwarf companion could actually be a lot of fun.  ;)

Dragon age female dwarves for the most part were all warrior ladies. Branka, Sigrun, etc. Dagna on the other hand, was very cute and bubbly. I guess even Sigrun was a tad bit cute and bubbly as well.
