Here's the mini dilemma: I'd love to create a new character - practically the female Shep from the back of the ME3 boxart (essentially a redhead who mains a sniper rifle, so probably an Infiltrator) - but I REALLY can't be bothered to go through ME1 yet again. It's just too much of a slog, and frankly it's simply not as enjoyable as a game experience compared to 2 and 3.
Do I bite the bullet and spend MS points on Genesis? Is it really worth it? Sure you get to pick some of the key events and make it stick (e.g. your chosen LI), but you lose all those assignments, Feros, and so on - some of which carry through to 3.
Have fellow RPG completists used Genesis and been happy with how 2 and 3 play out?
Is Genesis worth getting?

I'd say no. If you're not forced to use it because you're on a PS3 then don't bother with Genesis. For one thing it costs, for another you have to sit through it every time you start a new game in ME2, and for a third it misses out heaps of minor stuff including absolutely everything that happens on Feros. If you don't want to replay ME1 again then I'd suggest you download Gibbed for ME2, start a new game and create your femshep as you want, and then once the game's underway save it and use Gibbed to set the decisions you want to have been made had you replayed the first game.

I didn't know about Gibbed, but I've looked into it and it does seem the obviously superior option. Cheers for the heads up. I'd only want to set the plot, character level, LI pick and assignment flags so hopefully I won't break anything if I try it...
In ME2, would the edits be registered in the prologue - i.e before Miranda and Jacob do the mini interview in the shuttle?
/edit
DL'd it and edited a file. Only gotten to Freedom's Progress, but so far the changes have taken (e.g. reminding Tali about the geth data, Ash survived instead of Kaiden, money, minerals, AP's etc).

Sounds like you're on the right track with what you found out for yourself, and I should probably declare that I'm a relative newbie with Gibbed as well. But to answer the question I believe that Gibbed edits take effect wherever you choose (and are able) to create a save, and as far as I know the only word of warning about stuffing up the game with problems is about adding teammates before you talk to the Illusive Man for the first time. Since you're past that point and weren't talking about getting teammates early I think you're probably okay.

I used Genesis on the 360, cos I lost a ME1 save for MaleShep, and didn't want to play through ME1 again at that time. It did the job, but if you have the know how to use a Gibbed file thats the way to go.
I didn't have a clue about editors or files, so I was happy to use Genesis, it does the job well enough.

PsiFive - yeah, I saw the notes about adding in squadmates, although I would never have wanted to do that anyway. I've kept my character pretty consistent with how an important ME1 file would turn out. The only 'exploit' I've used with Gibbed is to give myself stacks of money and resources - I've played through both games multiple times so I deserve some bonuses!
Mordak55 - I'm primarily a console player who's only modded a few games on PC, and using Horizon and Gibbed is as simple as moving a file, clicking whatever plot flags you want and then swapping it back. If you're not too far into your ME2 run, I'd recommend using it - it's quick, easy, and you make the most of ME's file transfer system. PM me if you want pointers or links.
