Two bits of nit picking feedback so far

1)
On this page:
http://social.bioware.com/profile/6723

it says:
"Torias's Profile"

and on this page:
http://social.biowar...25601&lang_id=1

it says:
"Torias's Player Profile"

It needs to follow the standard rules for dealing with apostraphes when talking about people.

IE, if the last letter of the name is an "s", don't include another s.

so it should instead read:

"Torias' Profile"
and
"Torias' Player Profile"

2)
on this page:
http://social.bioware.com/profile/6723

it says my signup date is:
"10/13/2009"

which when ready by an Australian, is the 10th day of the 13th month. (I'm pretty sure most countries either use DD/MM/YYYY or YYYY/MM/DD... only the americans (and canadians??) </span>use MM/DD/YYYY as far as I know).

So, there should be some way for people to indicate what country / timezone they're in, and have the datetime displays done accordingly.

EDIT: <span _fcktemp="1"></span>I just found where to indicate my timezone :-)

But, the date display is still in the wonky bizarre MM/DD/YYYY format rather than DD/MM/YYYY format :-)

AND

two more things I noticed while typing this up(!)

3) I just noticed that all the post date time stamps are relative, ie: "Created 3 months ago".... that seems really weird to me and I'd much prefer an option to actually display the date time stamp (though displayed as per my indicated timezone).

4) The functionality for pasting text into the comment field is incredibly annoying.

That popup box either needs to die, OR, there needs to be a way of using the keyboard to hit the "OK" button. At the moment, it means I have to switch from two handed typing to one hand using the mouse, purely to click that damn "OK" button.

5)<br />

I just rated my own topic as "5 stars" and it seemed to take effect. <br />
<br />
People should not be able to rate their own topics.

6) displaying "Topics:X Posts:Y" is likely to have a negative impact by encouraging people to spam new topics and reply posts.

In the existing bioware forums, I believe the post count displays were removed or buried deep in a profile in order to stop encouraging spammy commenting.

7) Heh, after editing the post above, the "< br / >" stuff appeared in the edit text box, I didn't fix them (thinking they'd be stripped out) but they ended up as part of the post. That shouldn't happen.

Test edit 1 day later.

I agree that the things you posted about should be fixed and/or improved.

I concur. It can also lead to a sense of elitism. I don't mind that the statistics are available, they just shouldn't be flaunted with like this (and the topic-one probably shouldn't be there at all).

In fact, I would rather the forums here more closely imitated the BioBoards, both in style and behaviour. I can understand why it may work for the Facebook-ish aspects of the rest of the site but it makes the forums seem... well, unprofessional.

It happens all over the place right now. HTML tags are being inserted willy-nilly by wonky software somewhere.

As for the popup box, if you switch to BBCode style it doesn't happen. It's no solution but it's better than nothing until it's fixed. I only use the WYSIWYG editor for post previews anyway, which is one thing I sorely wish was available on the BioBoards.

I'd suggest putting the redundant "BioWare Social Network" title stuff at the *end* of the HTML TITLE of a forum link. When I open up multiple threads as tabs in my browser I no longer have any idea what they were, since all I see is a row of "BioWare Social Net" tabs.

I know what site I'm on already. The most important thing in a HTML TITLE field for me is the title of the thread or page, not the branding of whatever website I'm on.

Hey there! Thank you for your suggestions - we'll see what we can do about fixing some of those as soon as possible.

However, for #1 - "Torias's Profile" - this is correct usage of apostrophes and 's' (http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Apostrophes).

Thanks,
  -Brett

hmmm, in the link you posted:

Use apostrophes to indicate possession. There are two basic methods that make use of an apostrophe in constructing the possessive. Most words use an apostrophe followed by an "s" at the end of the word, although many situations require simply an apostrophe.

* Place an apostrophe before the "s" when you are indicating a singular possessive, unless the name or word ends in "s," in which case either is correct. (James's dog or James' dog, Dickens' novel or Dickens's novel)

o "Jacobs' shoes are very cool." The shoes belong to Jacob (singular: one person).

It says either is correct, but I must admit I was always taught that Torias' is the only correct one and that Torias's is always incorrect. It says that the chicago guide favors the second one, so maybe it's an another "american language diversion from english" thing :-)

So maybe I'll just add it to my own list of things like all the extra z's and the missing u's ;-)

Thanks :-)

That's exactly it.  Somewhere along the line, Americans decided they didn't want to be able to tell whether words ending in S were plural, so they broke the apostrophe system.

If you only use s' and never s's, then if I write "James' house" you absolutely cannot tell if I'm referring to a house belonging to a single person named James, or a house belonging to a group of people named Jame.  But if you stick with the proper 's for all singular possessives, the ambiguity vanishes.

It's Torias's profile.  Torias' profile looks like the profile of multiple people called Toria.

There are still a few pages that haven't had their titles updated and those that have all seem to start with "-" or "|," which doesn't really change all that much. I can see that it would be handy, though.

A small thing: when clicking a Mass Effect 2 ad (store.bioware.com), it opens in the same tab. I'd expect links to off-site content to be opened in a new tab by default.

edit:
After editing a post, I'm seeing the top of page 1 of the topic instead of my newly edited post. In addition, posts don't show a "last edited by name at time/date" message, which makes it more difficult to keep track of what's happening in a discussion when people start editing.

oooh, cause of that I checked, and I can still edit the post I made yesterday....

I think the bioware forums lock editing of your own posts 30 minutes or so after you post...

I think it's more sane and stable to have such a lock in place, to prevent people from going back to their older posts in an argument and changing things and so on...

It is probably not a big issue, but I instinctively think the lock out after 30 minutes remains a good idea that should be considered / evaluated for this social site :-)

There is a relative time next to the time of posting. I much prefer the timestamp myself.

Correct.

Whether the lock is better or worse is up for debate. It has all days frustrated me that I can't go back and fix legitimate errors in posts or make an index like post in the start of a thread. I'd much prefer that posts remain editable for as long as you can post in a thread. Besides, if there's a timestamp whenever you edit your post it becomes significantly harder to change things without becoming suspicious.

Another thing...
http://social.biowar...c/13/index/8152

errr, people can post images that appear on the forum as you open up the thread???

I'm sure that could be used for good, but it could also be used for horrible, horrible evil... I don't want to have to break out the eye bleach because someone decided to post a mind breakingly offensive picture....

My vote would be to disable the display of linked pictures in general forum threads....

(no, I'm not stalking you Torias, you just happen to post wherever I look)

Many forums display earlier posts on the "add new post" page so you can review them while typing up your own. It would be nice if the last few posts could be shown at the bottom of the page with the standard reply form (newest on top). I just found myself replying somewhere and scrolling down to reread the last post, but it wasn't there :)
