Clicking on Multiplayer in main menu takes me straight to character promotion

So I haven't played ME3 in a while and today booted it up after telling Origin to check for updates.  The first time I clicked on multiplayer in the main menu it took me to the regular multiplayer screen, at which point I went into the store to redeem my victory pack.  The game froze for ~3 minutes as it tried to redeem the pack and finally told me that the connection to EA servers was lost (big surprise there, BioWare).

I got kicked back to the main menu and I immediately clicked on Multiplayer once again, except this time it took me directly to the character promotion screen.  Frustrated, I rebooted the computer and tried again.  Same thing.  Everytime I click on multiplayer in the main menu, it takes me directly to character promotion.

What's this wonderful bug and how can I fix it?  I finally built up some more faith in ME3 to play it again and this it what happens.

EDIT: just browsed through the PC tech support forums and saw a whole slew of connection problems.  You know what, BioWare, why don't you just disable the GAW point system for those of us who just want to play the single player?

Event before most recent I saw my packs, a fraction of a second later it said I lost connect. Coming back, they were gone. Called EA, they claimed I never participated in the event. Myself and many other people have lost connect in the shop, only to find when coming back that items were charged but never delivered...in the case where it lost victory packs, I never even clicked on a button, it just got to the shop then summarily erased my existence. In several other cases myself and others have lost connect in the shop only to come back and all character personalizations are erased, e.g., powers reset, color picks reset, so on. Sometimes people with cloud on in origin can wait a few minutes and then exit and it'll come back, but not always. Sometimes people who disconnect with cloud on instead lose authorization to even log in. So...you are just at the tip of the iceberg. My guess is you have to promote and reset it and start over, but who knows...that could make it worse or do nothing.
