I was wondering how anyone outside of the wardens and the darkspawn would know if someone had been put through the joining?   In fact can one grey warden sense another grey warden?   It occurred to me that once a warden commander had laid claim to someone they are considered a grey warden even before going through the ritual (so Duncan killed Jordy for refusing to do it, when the latter thought it was still possible to withdraw and drew his sword because he thought it was being forced on him).      Now I actually think it is pretty pointless putting people through the ritual in between blights because the wastage through people failing the joining and the shortening of their lifespan if they survive it, outweighs the potential benefits.   So if a warden commander recruited people but didn't put them through the joining, who would know?  

Also did someone once say that the Wardens are limited in the number of mages they can recruit.  Otherwise, what is to stop a Warden recruiting a large number of mages to help keep them safe from the templars and allow them to move around freely.   Or do you think the templars will now ignore grey warden immunity from their attentions.

I won't be at all surprised to see the templars attacking the Grey Wardens for harboring mages, no. As for the other thing, I'm fairly sure Grey Wardens can sense each other, given their inherent taint-sensing powers.

Gray Wardens never have more then one mage. And the joining also makes Wardens imune to the taint. Origins did not do a great job of showing this as only the MC and Alistair are Wardens but anyone who has not gone through the joining If scratched or bit by a Darkspawn will get the taint and die. So since even though there is no Blight you still need to go through the joining to be effective at fighting Darkspawn.
