Use the special Arcane Warrior blade from the Urn of Sacred Ashes questline. This with a shield. I also like the Diligence Armor set that gives bonus to casting healing spells.
Edit: I meant Effort Armor, which seems to have been built for Arcane Warriors.

That'd be Spellweaver:
Acquired by killing the Cultist Overseer in the eastern cave of the Mountainside Caverns during the search for the Urn of Sacred Ashes. It can also be found in the Elven Burial Chamber in the Brecilian Ruins, from the Shade. It seems you need to have completed Castle Redcliffe first to have this happen.
Just put the staff in your 1st weapon set and the sword in your 2nd weapon set.
When enemies get too close you switch weapons.

Depends what you want to do, really... If you took Arcane Warrior to cast spells from afar while being well protected in a heavy armor (be aware that you incur increased fatigue with heavy armors), then you should probably stick with the staff.
If you took Arcane Warrior to be able to damage your enemies when you are out of mana/spells, then you might want to go with two weapons, for a good, fast damage output. I tried two-handed weapons, but it is too slow. Since your attack is not that great, taking 20 seconds to slash your sword, only to miss is quite annoying.
I personally am still in mage robes. They give much better bonuses to magic than any armor, and don't increase my fatigue too much. When I go into melee, I activate a couple protection spells, and coupled with high defense boots (+12, I believe), robes that also give me some defense, and a good tank, I don't have many dying problems, in Hard.

I use my Arcane Warrior as a main tank. He wears massive armor and wields a sword and shield. He has tons of armor (Rock Armor, Arcane Shield, Shimmering Shield...) and many resistances. He's almost unkillable. His 2nd specialization is Blood Mage so he's also capable of dealing a lot of damage.

Arcane Warrior is neat because you can pretty much play it however you want. You can stick with a staff and use his natural armors to buff your defense while continuing to mostly do ranged attacks. Or you can throw him into the fray as a tank. Your choice. Spellweaver is the best sword for an AW and thus should be the only sword you consider using. I also advise going DW over sword-and-board, just because it seems to do more damage.

Is there more than the plate? I only ever found the armor, but not boots or gauntlets.
I love the arcane warrior build. I get to have my cake and eat it too. I can be a mage and a fighter, yay.
On another note, about the blood mage, how does that get unlocked? I'm utterly clueless about it. I thought maybe fouling the ashes would do it, but it seems to unlock the reaper.

There's an entire set (no helm.) off Sophia Dryden. To the OPs question you should do melee weapon if you plan on keeping Combat Magic up at all times or at least during combat, staff is just if you plan on casting w/ some extra armor.
