Having finished my first playthrough as a mage, I'm wondering what everyone thought the hardest or most challenging battles were in the game.

For me it was definitely Branka.  I did the Deep Roads last of all the treaty quests so she was at her maximum difficulty, and she kept resisting all my spells.  I must have reloaded that battle at least 30 times over two days before I finally beat her.

The Spider Queen earlier in Deep Roads was pretty challenging for me as well.

This playthrough I'm doing Deep Roads ASAP!  :)

The High Dragon. I only had Sten, Oghren and Leliana with me. Let's just say that I had reload a lot.

Branka was definitely the most difficult for me - partly because I stubbornly kept going with almost no health poultices and a party consisting of my character (a rogue), Zevran, Oghren (with no weapon even), and Shale.

Last time I didn't shoot myself in the foot about it (Oghren had reasonable equipment and I had Wynne instead of Shale) and it was still plenty tough. I tend to have problems with golems.

Branka and spider queen were heavy fights to me with my main character like a 2 handed warrior.

Im now playing with a mage like main character, and with curse and glyphts, hard bosses are easier to defeat. (We will see when reaching these foes )

None of the bosses were really difficult with my three warrior, 1 rogue group though the spider queen posed the most challenge. Overall, my hardest fights were the various ones with multiple darkspawn mages scattered about behind mobs with crowd control. There was one fight with two down a long corridor and lots of spiders as allies that took a while to get right. And that first room in the palace with the archers behind barricades, three emissaries, drakes, etc.

Witherfang with Zathrian, hardest fight in the game. Zathrian enjoys team killing and the werewolves hit hard....Very hard.

On my very first play-through, it was the broodmother. The shock-factor at first seeing her did weigh in heavily there.

I didn't have internet access all through November, and was unspoiled, so I didn't expect anything like this. I almost jumped out of my chair when my PC-girl and her group rounded that corner, let me tell you.

Branka, definately the hardest first playthrough, especially as you can't turn around and head out and come back later. My one time I had to turn down the difficulty.

However having recently completed my 3rd playthrough with the set-up below, I can confirm it was an absolute breeze and this time I was turning difficulty up on occasion.

Still, there were 2 sticky moments. First coming into Frostback Mountains; those bandits have been a **** every time (I was pushing for Oghren last playthrough, so possibly under-geared). Second was the side-quest to rescue the kidnapped nobles son; quite late in what had been a smooth play-through, I was so not expecting a party wipe Image IPBImage IPB

Totally agree.  Dont know what that woman eats for breakfast. Really tough.

Branka and Spider queen are very annoying too.

My main character (Who was a shield-wielding tank..) got her ass kicked by a group of eight bandit archers in Denerim. On easy mode. I felt ashamed.

This.
I can't believe this isn't everyone's answer.
Are there really people that found this fight easier than Branka?

That fight at Arl Howe's was hopeless enough for me that I thought I was supposed to lose it, which I suppose is somewhat true. The broodmother also sticks out in my mind, as seeing that thing was such a shock on the first playthrough, and I barely made it out.

I never fought Cauthrien, I gave myself up and escaped from Fort Drakon, much easier and persuaded her to stand down at the landsmeet to.

The final battle for me. Morrigan walked out and she was my healer (respec mod), I only had a couple heal spells, and I didn't want to use Wynne. Alistair and Sten managed to survive long enough to kill the Archdemon however. Next to that it was probably the spider queen in the Deep Roads.

I didn't fight Cauthrien yet, don't know how difficult she is to beat.

You dont have to fight Cauthrien at Arl Howe's place, it's completely optional** and actually balanced on the  nearly impossible for PC to win side, in order for you to gain the Prison quest that follows.

**If you're roleplaying, there is no way you would risk the Queen's life by trying to fight an army that outnumbers you 10:1. Even if you would risk your own and your companions.

Ser Cauthrien's fight.

One thing about roleplaying is that everyone can come up with their own justifications and each will be valid.

Branka was actually easy for me so I have no idea why everyone thinks shes so tough. I killed a few golems (not all) and then got her. CC spells help alot and are super effective against the golems themselves.

Cautherien was tough but nothing I couldn't handle. Pulled back and shielded the doorway while laying an aoe spell into there room. Once the archers were down I picked her to pieces with my warriors. Also the mage was spirit prisoned so he didn't last.

How does surrendering help the queen?  She's more likely to "slip away in the confusion" if there's actually some confusion going on.  I would expect if you surrendered she would be arrested, returned to her father, and disappeared.

Ser Clauthrien at Arl Howe's--hardest by far.

I imagine most real men are lying dead on the flagstones, then.  :P

Flemeth was the hardest for me the first time around. But then I was not even level 10 and had just started playing the game.
