To preface this, I normally play as a Sheploo, so ordinarily I'd take Ashley over Kaidan. I always felt it was a bit odd doing that because, okay yes Ash is a romance option, yet Kaidan seems like the more valuable asset (human biotic vs vanilla soldier).

Romancing Ashley, the scene with her in ME2 left a bitter taste in my mouth, and then she gobs off in ME3 about me cheating on her when it was her who rejected me, whereas Kaidan is a bit more understandable. Anyway moving on slightly - in ME3 they both do things that irk me. Kaidan suddenly starts coming on to me which seems a bit bizarre, and Ash gets drunk - great move from an officer and the second human spectre.

So what am I asking? I guess who makes more sense for me to save? I generally like each of their personalities although Ash can be quite the little racist. I'm thinking my paragon Shep should just have a Liara romance all the way through now, and that my renegade Shep should romance Ash (currently it's the other way around).

Regarding gameplay, in ME3 Ash has the advantage in weapons (sniper rifles instead of pistols) yet again Kaidan has a protection buff (Barrier) and seemingly more useful powers.

Anyway, thoughts?

I don't think it doesn't have to "make sense", really, as to who to save. Choosing who to save on Virmire was a decision purely based on the player's emotions.

With that in mind, normally I'd say "save whoever you like most", but since they both seem to irk you a little bit... you have two playthroughs, right? You should probably pick Ash with one (your romance, I guess) and Kaidan with the other. Can also depend on how you roleplay your Shepards, as in, who do they like most.

As for gameplay... both have their uses, as you pointed out.

Kaidan has more content in ME3. Ash is a mute.

Save Kaidan, if you don't plan on romancing Ash.

I really like Ashley and, had I not left her on Virmire, She would have been at LI Status.

I usually save Kaidan because he's my brother in arms and the game always gave me the impression that he and Shepard might be friends prior to Mass Effect's beginning.

So, for me at least, It came down to the friend who has had your back for posisbly years, or the girl who's been at your side for maybe 2 or 3 months.

i always save kaidan, though i am currently trying to play a male shep, and i have ashley alive this time, imo kaidan seems the better choice, mostly because his powers are of more use, and he's not racist, but its really a case of who fits your gameplay, i'm usually a female shep, so i romance kaidan, keeping him alive makes more sense for me, with my male shep i'm romancing tali, so it didnt really matter who i chose to save.

I personally hate both. I left Kaidan on Virmire, and I fired on Ashley ehheheh. However, I think it's better Ashley, at least she stays silent

Kaidan has better powers, gameplaywise. Their roles are so similar it doesn't change much. I personally prefer Kaidan's personality, so I stick to him on all playthrough, I played with Ashley long enough to unlock her power and that's it.

Kaidan's name is offten Mispelt.  most people Spell it with an E when the correct spelling is with an A,,, it is also the name of Kaidan's twin evil  brother Kaiden.. 


I always save Kaidan. even if you don't romance him, his personalty is better and he has better powers...
... but then again, I'm biased.. and can not kill Kaidan.

If you're not romancing either, pick the one whose power you want most in the third game. Kaidan gives reave/barrier and Ashley gives inferno grenade/marksman. Pick whichever is most useful to you.

Yes I am a Tali fan but Jack is in at an extremely close second. For whatever reason Ashley and Kaiden I have never liked. Hell I like Jacob more then I like Ashley.
