If you are a guy then of course its Ashley.
If you are a girl or gay then its Kaidan.

What about the rules "Chicks before d*cks" and "Bros before hoes"?

In this instance though, sorry Kaidan. Garrus is a suitable replacement.

I've personally found Kaidan far more versatile. He has skills to strip every type of protection; he can set up and execute biotic and tech combos; he has crowd control with cryo blast; he has barrier to help keep him alive and his weapon load out out is certainly adequate. He basically takes how powerful and useful Miranda was in ME2 and adds to it. EDI comes the closest to overlapping with Kaidan, though she falls short of his utility because she cannot work with biotic combos and is restricted to only pistols. In contrast, Ashley takes what Zaeed was in ME2 and only tweaks it slightly and there is a lot of overlap between her and Garrus.

I kind of have to disagree with that there.  While there are some overlapping, Garrus is more along the lines of weakening the opponent before attacking while Ashley is more of weapon damage and fire power, marksmen has made her into a beast that keeps on stealing all my kills.  Plus I could be wrong but I think Ashley is more durable than Garrus or at least dies less often than him.

Kaidan has more content in ME3. Ash is a mute.

Save Kaidan, if you don't plan on romancing Ash.

(This from an Ashley fan too).

Basically this.

Ashley without romance isn't rewarding at all.
And yeah, I'm an Ashfan too.

IMO, even if you do romance her, you're doing her a favor leaving her on Virmire. :( What they did with her in 3 (and what they didn't) is just that bad.

Also, yeah, from a mechanical perspective she's wildly inferior to Kaidan. How the hell the second-squishiest squadmate in ME1 became the absolute toughest tank in 3 and the unkillable warrior goddess became a frail little flower is utterly beyond me. Must have something to do with that catsuit she got stuck with after Kaidan stole her armor.

Here's where I was coming from with the Ashley and Garrus comparison.  The weapon load outs are identical, both use assault rifles and sniper rifles.  Both have a means of dealing with shields and barriers, for Garrus it's overload for Ashley it's disruptor ammo.  Both have a means of dealing with armor, for Garrus it's armor piercing ammo for Ashley it's inferno grenade, and I'd argue, given that this is a very limited resource, inferno grenades may even be a mark against Ashley's utility.  Both have concussion shot.  The passive of both Garrus and Ashley have evolutions that improve sniper and assault rifle damage.  Four out of the five powers for Ashley have an analogue covered by Garrus.  You are correct, marksman and proximity mine are distinct and follow the weapon focus versus debuffing approach you outlined as your argument.  In so far as survivability is concerned, I have not personally noticed a difference so that may be an artifact of our distinct playstyles.

I like Ashley a lot she was my favorite squad member from ME 1. I also for a long time hated Kaiden. I had one playthrough with him on my and I was a sentinel so he was useless to me and got shot on the citadel. That said there are some good things about Kaiden in ME 3. He seems a lot less annoying he came off to me as a pansy before but now he comes off as passionate. However for me in ME 3 generally the default choice is to save Ashley.

ME3 Ash does not live up to ME1 Ash. Kaidan also has more content in ME3.

I'd go for Kaidan.

Borderline character assassination in my view :pinched: also its never been said who wrote her for ME3

Also, Its best if you save Kaidan because his better for gameplay reasons as well as better content overall

(Ash fan speaking)

If you're asking who to take, and romance doesn't matter, go for Kaidan, eight ways to Sunday, for no other reason than gameplay: Kaidan's one of, if not the, most useful squad member due to his versatile nature, high biotic damage, and ability to pierce all enemy defenses. Ashley, by contrast, can only do weapons, and she's inferior to Garrus in that respect, so there's no reason to take her at all unless you like her.

Obviously, it's all a matter of personal preferences. Personally, I find Ashley dying on Virmire thematically stronger than Kaidan - it gives her a solid arc, going from the blacklisted officer due to her grandfather's actions on Shanxi to sacrificing herself in the line of duty and gaining respect from the Alliance. Then there's the legacy that we overhear in ME2 - Ashley is honored by recieving medals from alien militaries, the first human to do so. Kaidan just gets a scholarship named after him, something that doesn't feel as strongly connected to his character arc. Plus Ash seems very forgotten once she rejoins the Normandy, while Kaidan gets out of the Observation deck and gets involved, so that's nice. And, okay, personally, I like to romance him with male Shepard, though I know that isn't everyone's cup of tea.

But it's really up to you - try it out, see what you like more.

Ashleys a cocky bigot.
Kaidans my bro. Chill, laid back, has his head screwed on straight, and reasonable.
I have only saved Ash once out of my five ME1 playthroughs.

Save both. Kaiden has reave which is a godsend for any biotic, while ash has marksman which is great for shooters.
