I'm not upset he uses a sword. I'm upset that his plot armor allows him to use a sword.
Why exactly were people so upset over Kai Leng using a sword?

Leng's speciality in melee combat could make him an interesting contrast to most of the ME universe, but him actually using a katana seems like such a daft anachronism and makes him look more like a fancharacter. He's just a crap character in general; the sword just feels like the manifestation of that.
Don't get me wrong; a Cerberus assassin loaded with Reaper technology, a specialist in melee combat who's loaded with the powers of alien horrors from beyond the depths of time so guns will be the least of his concerns; that's all great material on paper. Who was the hack that came up with the idea of him using a katana though? Why not give him something melee-oriented that fits better with the elements of stealth and subterfuge while still being incredibly dangerous and makes him fit more in the setting, like a pair of those nifty retractable hard-light blades that act like punch-daggers? But no, he's got to be a space ninja, with a damned katana, like every other crappy weeaboo fancharacter to ever pollute the Internet.

"Bring a knife to a gun fight" ring a bell? The odd thing is that a sword easily goes through armor that is designed to stop high speed flechettes....

Weird, I thought space ninjas would be too video-gamey.
You got a point there, but I have a counterpoint: art n sh*t.
Check and mate.

I suppose they expected everyone to know Kai Leng from retribution or *ughh* deception, and ****** their pants in excitement when they saw him. Too bad his game appearances as well as his characterization mounted to paper thin. "i shot him in the legs once, hes bad" by Anderson, thats not enough explanation of him to new players or even old players.
He was actually handled better in the original leaked script, if you can believe that, if you lost to him on Thessia( there was no scripted fight) he actually killed one of your squadmates, either Liara or any other you had with you If i recall correctly. It seems Bioware has a tendency to change something that was good to much worse...

I think Kai Leng was ok. As good at least as Saren with his flying platform and lame lines like "Join us!".
And the swords were great addition for phantoms and Kai Leng.
