According to BioWare’s Tully Ackland, “You may notice that in the ‘Shepard lives’ ending, the love interest hesitates to place Shepard’s name on the wall, and instead looks up as though deep in thought. This is meant to suggest that the love interest is not ready to believe Shepard is dead, and the final scene reveals they are correct. As the Normandy lifts off, there is hope that the love interest and Shepard will again be together.” http://www.ubergizmo...firmed-bioware/

Shepard does somehow survive this ending according to BioWare.

Surviving the explosion is not that big a deal for me. He was clearly on a shielded area of the Citadel (since he was not dying from being exposed to the vacuum of space with no helmet or armor). Who knows how much of that explosion those shields absorbed. Since he breathes at the end, that shielding must still be in tact (once again, he couldn't breathe if exposed to the vacuum of space) even after the explosion, which would imply this area is protected from the blast. The rubble he lies in is apparently the rubble of the power conduit that he blasts to crap. Jessica Merizan makes it clear that he is on the Citadel and did not fall to Earth on her twitter feed. When asked how Shepard could survive re-entry without a helmet in the extended cut, she responsed "@TheDaniCita re-entry? Shep's on the Citadel" (tweeted on April 12, 2012 at 2:41 AM, you can check her Twitter account if you don't believe me, or find it here: http://social.biowar...ndex/11270664/1)

As for his synthetic implants, we are not sure how much of him is still synthetic after he has been healing for quite some time since the Lazarus Project. For all we know, his vital organs may be able to survive without the synthetics by now (apparently they can based on the breath scene). I'm sure he is in really rough shape, but if they rebuilt him from being brain dead once before, I am sure they can fix up a dude who is still breathing on his own if they find him soon enough (even with damaged technology from the Crucible firing).

None of this says Shepard "lives"  Just that Shepard is "not dead yet". It's still all "lots of speculation" which is what caused the trouble with the original endings to begin with.  It's the end of the trilogy, the time for speculations is over.  Now we need an ending, once and for all.

Normandy lifts off the planet:  an end
Shepard still stuck in rubble on the Citadel:  speculation

Was this before or after she said EDI and the geth could survive Destroy? Image IPB

This is actually the least problem I have with the ending.

Uh. It doesn't matter. Liara T'soni + whatever means necessary + Miranda Lawson + Lazarus II = Shepard lives.

You just know it. Deep down. No matter what, you just know Liara can't let Shepard die, even if Shepard is involved with someone else.

Posts like these make me realize that people don't read the news anymore. Real people have lived through explosions, bombings and earthquakes without shields, medigel or super advanced polymer armor.

Exactly, people have survived like 2 weeks buried under rubble after major earthquakes, and these are regular people.

Who says he survives for more than 10 seconds?
If they want me to headcanon that, I headcanon that Shepard doesn't act like a moron and shoots the pipe from a distance, since you know, he has a gun and all. He then sits on the Citadel until Joker can get his back back to Earth and pick him up. No rubble involved what so ever.

Yes, you hear about these things happening.

We don't hear about it happening for SHepard.  That's the problem. No clarity.  No closure.

Also, i doubt none of them walked right into an explosion firing point blank into it.

No instead we get trolled by Priestly and Hepler (who probably picked control). Unfortunately for their troll it's not a death rattle.

Wow...

Did he really say that? I'm not surprised given how hilariously out of touch there people are with the fan community.

And for this to be true, it would have to show in ALL Destroy endings (In control and Synthesis there isn't anything left of Shepard's body to worry about), yet it only shows in High-level EMS Destroy.

Gasp of Breath = Survival.  Only possibility of Death is later dying from Injuries caused by the Crucible & Harbinger, and for the record, My Shepard Survived.

With a low EMS, Shep doesn't even take in a gasp of air so why indicate otherwise with the high EMS scene but to take it even further, why have Sheps fate clear in the other 2 original endings but not in destroy?

Bioware does not know what the heck is going on.............at Comic Con Panel they did not confirm whether he was alive or not. I really don't think Bioware knew how they wanted to end the series, they were just clueless its really amazing to me. ME3 was just a big F up, if only I could have been a fly on the wall at Bioware. What in the world were they doing over there?????

I know that, and trust me in my playthrough Shepard survives. But the mere fact that guys like John Epler have said "It could be his last breathe before dying trololol" kinda shows ignorance on their part.

My Shep survived the rubble thanks to several keepers softening the impact after he was blown clear of the catalyst chamber. He then got picked up by joker and flown to Omega, where he is getting spit roasted by Kaidan and Cortez as we speak.

I....I just....

What the ****?

What on Earth caused you to headcanon this?

Chris Hepler!

John Epler is a fantastic cinematic designer for the Dragon Age team. He has nothing to do with Shepard living or dying.

Chris Hepler is a writer for the Mass Effect team. He tried to joke at SDCC, and it became the official response to the question of how Shepard could survive the destroy ending (like Priestly said in an official community Q&A: "You assume Shepard survived." Next question.). Which should tell you how little a joke it really was.

And the fact that the scene can so easily be interpreted that way shows just how cold a comfort that scene is.

Haha omg that took me a second. So is "spit roasting" the common term for this?

I like the sight of humans on their knees speculating.

I'm sure Mac would find it equally entertaining.
