Posted ImagePosted ImageYou know, I avoid strategy guides. First, the temptation is too high to "peek ahead", and especially in a game like this, where story plays a large part, it can really spoil a game. If I get "stuck" in a spot, it means either I'm not looking everywhere or I'm not trying everything. What's nice about this game, if I think i'm going to be soon getting in a tough spot, I save well ahead of time and just simply go back and correct my mistakes (or supposed mistakes) on my own. Where's the feeling of accomplishment when you read out of a book "all you characters should have this item and these potions and should do this"- Is that really enjoyable?

But like others have said, there are bound to be spots where you REALLY just want to get by, and you've tried a hundred times to no avail (I have been there), so then I'd just hit the forums here...the Wiki would be just like the SG...too much info at your fingertips.

Hey Random_PcGamer... I see you're back... you're not going to have 3 accounts to pretend they're someone else and "support" you in your non-sense posts are you? Remember that it got you banned from GameSpot/GameFAQs!

Oh, has anyone called you in X-Fire yet? Still waiting? Still saying that people that don't think like you or don't agree with your opinion are lame losers like you did there, or "are sadly mistaken" as you put it...

Just out of curiosity, in Risen, where maximum level to 100% -1 player (that's you) ranges between 29-31, you claimed to be able to reach level 42... and when those 100% forum regulars confronted you, you showed a pic that I countered with one even better, lvl 54. (100% cheated like yours though). Which caused you to spam the forum with your other accounts asking ppl to call you on your X-Fire (saw you're doing that here already!) and calling us all sort of names because none would ever call you on your X-Fire...

What about Dragon Age where 100%(-you of course) can reach a max ranging bet 20-25? Can you go higher than the maximum we common mortals can, here too?

What does any of this rant have to do with Strategy Guides?Posted Image

It has to do with who he is and with his record in some forum where I met him before and he was actually banned from them, plus this part of his post really insults me... specially from a known cheater that to prove his theory about Risen posted a .jpg of a character screen that was clearly built with cheat and claimed it was legit.

If people here think that you can learn about everything from a game by just playing it, then they are sadly mistaken, especially with a set up like Dragon Age Origins because that is virtually impossible to do unless you spend about 5 years playing it. There are stats, examples set ups, and just things that are no where to be found in the game or you would ever think to do. And that is because just like people thinking a guide is only used for one thing, they are not realizing all this excesss stuff available in the game because they are too one track minded.

When I had my first sex none was selling guides about anything. I wont even say here how old I was to avoid shocking some people.
Bu then when I see statistics about how many girls actually do not enjoy their first sex even in these modern times I wonder if the guides you boys get nowdays are worth anything.

Hey! I bought the Collectors Edition Sex Boxset, it comes with strategy guide, fabric map and night-vision goggles.

I bought the CE guide to go along with my CE copy of the game. Mainly because i have been waiting for this game for so damn long, i had to have everything that went a long with it. The book is great looking. Lots of artwork and extra history. The gameplay guide is just an added bonus.

Nah, strategy guides simply occupy too much space and you get better info from reading forums and other online sources.

Gifts are trivial ... how can one miss them ? They come with their own tooltip, after all ... and you cant even disable these damn buggers. The only problem is to find out who wants which gifts, and thats really a tricky one.

I have to say, since I discovered gamefaqs, I haven't bought any strategy guides. I hate that what we call strategy guides of today were the instruction manuals of yesterday. Do you remember the manual for Baldur's Gate? You could rob a bank with that thing. But seriously, when tons of people offer free walkthroughs, it's hard to justify spending money on a paper guide... which, especially if it's Prima, usually has bad and outdated information in it anyway.

Well, there's no such title but you don't have to worry about being such :) Don't be afraid to do things in a wrong way. Or maybe miss a quest or two. As I mentioned, on my first play through of a new game I usually also miss fair amount of stuff because I am still getting to know the game. On following play throughs - and a good game is worth more then one play through - then I start to focus more on details. By then I already have the "experience" from the first run and it makes a good base to build upon additional experience. And before you know it, the details start to unravel before you and what at first felt like some crazy puzzle will be clearer next time.

The hardcover version was worth every penny to get the extra background on the world and other details they barely touched on in the game.

I had made 2 complete playthroughs before the guide even showed up as it was out of stock when I put in my order. It's really a beautiful looking book and has tons of information that should have been in the game manual I think. For anyone skilled in RPG games the first few sections will be boring as they describe the classes and races, but later on there's a ton of good information I think.

The artwork section is also a nice bonus over the softcover edition.

If you are out and get a chance to page through it, go for it.

I like strategy guides because they're the closest thing to a 'proper' manual these days, and I'm willing to shell out extra for games I like for it. Collection purposes mostly, because I'm an RPG collector as a hobby.

But really, I only really use it for what, the data tables? In this case just for the equips since the spell tables are as bad as the ingame tooltips? I certainly didn't use it all that much, especially since their builds and their strategies are far from optimized. They're really geared to the general public, and as hardcore powergamer, their 'advice' is all but useless to me. XD

Strategy guides make excellent reading material while sitting on the bog. I usually buy them for this purpose. That way, even when you're on a bio-break you can still be playing, in a way.

LOL, Juggernawt! Newspapers are more inspirational than a game guide... unless the game is cr*p of course! =)

I bought the guide as I do not have hundreds of hours of 'play' time anymore, so it's helpful to shorten the 'learning curve'. It's kind of sad how many people either brag about how they don't need one cause they're such great gamers or flame people because they're 'idiots' for wasting the money when they can get info free.

So to the OP, I would put it this way. You CHOSE to buy the Strategy Guide because you thought it would help you enjoy the game more. Good for you. I did to.

For those who won't buy one because they like to figure it all out on their own...good for you to. You have more time/patience than I do (I'm envious, my rl is too busy now to allow me that kind of playing time anymore).

For those won't either can't afford a guide or prefer to use online resources exclusively...good for you. It's your choice to spend or not.

Bottom line, quit being critical of other people about how they choose to use their time/resources to enjoy their single-player game.

Overall, DAO is a great accomplishment so let's have as much fun as we can with it.

I usually get a strategy guide for just about every game I get, this is no exception. I find it quite useful.

I second this.. have a guide for all games I have played. I don't exactly follow it to the letter, but it has helped get my butt from being handed to me several times over the years :o

I have a customer who brought her copy in to show me, it is very well done and like any strategy guide, you are not obliged to use it in areas where you do not really need help.

Can't say I would buy a guide for this game, it is far from difficult... but for those looking for obscure variations in the story or alternative endings, I suppose it has its value. The only guide I used was a six pack to numb some minor frustrations (or was it the six pack that caused them, I may have to experiment)
