I'm looking at Ash's special abilities, and obviously Marksman is effective if you give her, say, the Revenant. But I really, really don't like micromanaging my squaddies (yes it's lazy, I know) so I'm wondering how often she'll activate it herself, or whether it's something I'd need to do for her?
Do I need to micromanaged Ashley's 'Marksman' ability?

No she'll activate it herself a majority of the time. She's a great squadmate in combat. I'd say only James and Javik are better in terms of firepower + health.

Give Ash a Widow / Black Widow with maxed out damage and let her do most of the work. She'll do fine in most situations - to a point she takes some of your kills. That's all.
No need to micro here. I'd say, out of the bunch she's only less durable than James but not less deadly. Javik is, like BP93 said, another top choice 'though I saw him falling more often than Ash. He's a bullet magnet
