For a 2H warrior with high strength- which is better?  They both seem to be comparable, but in terms of damage what would you suggest?

Starfang is free, the Maul costs a ton. If you have money to burn though, the extra Stamina on the Maul is *huge* for 2h warriors, at least in anything that isn't a long fight. 75 Stamina is like 15 points of Willpower worth of Stamina (if I'm remembering correctly, it's 5 per point)!

Can't say for starfang. I've seen it deals much damage, but apart from this I have no idea. Great maul is what I am using right now. With a haste spell, I can obliterrate anything without too much difficulty. The only weapon that gets somehow close, is the sword you get from that side quest in the circle of the magi, but it's still not even slightly as strong as the maul.

The average damage will be of 80 per hit, criticals going over 100 without powerful swings. Add the rune or "element" weapons you use and you have quite a lot of damage dealt.

Definitely go for the Chasind Great Maul for the following reasons:

1. High strength benefits it more with the 1.25 modifier

2. Higher armor penetration

3. More Stamina

Mauls. Every enemy in the game has an Armor Rating, whether it's wearing actual armor or not. Higher Armor Penetration pushes more damage through that Armor Rating, resulting in higher damage. To that end, your best weapon choices are going to be the Axe for one-handed weapons, and the Maul for Two-handed weapons, as those have the highest Armor Penetration.

4 Warrior
1 Human/Dwarf
4 Fade
2 Berserker
2 Key to the City
2 Honnleath Ring
2 Andruil's Blessing
2 Helm of Honnleath
71 level up at lvl 23
90 total STR modifier w/out tome usage

Starfang
25.5 effective average base damage (including the +3 STR)
61.9 average attribute damage @ 90 STR modifier (100 STR)
8.8 AP
+9.5 effective attack

Chasind Great Maul
21.2 effective average base damage
70 average attribute damage
16.5AP
+0.5 stam regen
+75 stam

As you can see, Chasind Great Maul's damage is only slightly higher than starfang at these levels (91.2 vs 87.4 damage, 16.5 AP va 8.8 AP, around 11.5 total damage for enemies with armor >16.5). So is the minor improvement in damage and more stamina worth the 150g? Only if you filled out everyone else's equips and you've got nothing else to spend money on.

Besides, early-mid game you're more concerned about your attack rating, and at these levels Chasind's attribute damage wouldn't be pronounced (it only breaks even at ~55 total STR), so Starfang is superior until you've practically bought every other expensive equips OTHER than chasind great maul on a cost/effect ratio basis. Buy it before you go to Redcliffe for the last time (ie. at the last possible moment), and you should be good.

Or you can look at it this way. Most of the time with these games, the creators favor swords over all other weapon types making them useful only in certain situations (i.e swords balance in Damage, AP, and Crit. VS. Mauls inferior base damage but high AP and Axes slightly higher Crit with lower AP and medium damage. making both mauls and axes very situational)

This fascination that some game creators have with long sleder smooth objects in their grasp really makes me wonder sometimes. So with all statistics aside, if your going for the maul its safe to assume thats because you dont WANT to use a sword, in which case, the Chasind Great Maul beats the Starfang by a long shot.

Swords: Lowest AP, Highest Base Damage, Mid Crit

Axes: Mid AP, Mid Base Damage, Highest Crit

Maces: Highest AP, Low Base Damage, Lowest Crit

Daggers: High AP, High Crit, Lowest Base Damage.

Thats about it, but they do favor Swords/daggers in this game, ever backstabbed someone with an axe? It's pretty funny.

The 2h maul is a lot better, especially than it appears on the character sheet.

1) It has a lower spread of damage than the greatsword, so hits more consistent.

2) It has much higher armor penetration (although we all should know this by now)

3) It actually adds more value per point of strength to damage than the greatsword does (125% vs 110%)

4) It actually swings slower than the 2h sword, which means that the DPS display while being technically correct (showing average damage) undestimates it top damage potential.

Now, #4 might not seem like too big of a deal until you consider that the primary advantage of using 2h weapon styles is that many of the attacks are instant (no delay) attacks. Sunder Arms/Armor is 2 attacks for the cost of one, Mighty Blow, Critical Strike and Two Handed Sweep all fire off independently of your swing timer as well.

For people familiar with MMORPG's, this kind of consideration is exactly the same as comparing "burst damage" vs. "damage over time". The 2h warrior is certainly a burst damage class, so what you really want is a weapon that is going to give you consistently high top hits so you can capitalize on the fact that your abilities often ignore the internal weapon swing timer.

This is why in this game mechanic system, the 2h maul almost always wins out over other weapon types. Less variation in damage, higher armor penetration, slow speed, high top damage.

Keep in mind, it's not so much of an advantage as to make it incredibly obviously superior, but the advantage is there and sort of built into the game mechanics.

Just think of it this way, the best weapon for a 2h warrior would be a 1 DPS weapon that did 1000 points of damage, but had a 1000 second swing timer :)

Agreed, the Chasind Great Maul is better. The more strength you have, the greater the difference (both because of the higher str modifier and the fact that more strength = less willpower = more benefit from that +75 stamina stat).

Starfang isn't far behind it. It is a good weapon, second only to the Chasind Great Maul. That might change when Return to Ostagar is released, if the king's 2h sword is available and made powerful.
