I know what you mean. It isn't just the new art style, nor is it just the writing, but I can't quite put my finger on why the two games just feel so different from each other.

Much of DA2's style and feeling derives from the way the story is told, from Varrics rather...ahem...colourful and action-oriented way of telling stories. At least that'S the justification I have for the change in style. In DAO we followed the Warden's story "realistically" and saw the things first-handed, through the Warden's very eyes.

DA2 is through Varric's eyes, third-person-telling so to speak, and therefore feels less realistic and over-the-top.

Playing a little "devil's advocate" here in Bioware's favor, I guess. If it was intentional, not many player's got it, I suppose...if not intentional, I might be making things up to justify the changed stuff...

I think I'd stop playing if that were the case. You just can't handle things like Blights, civil wars, racism and religious persecution in a bright or enthusiastic way.

That might be part of it too. Certainly DA II felt much more "framed", cinematic and linear than it's predecessor. Perhaps that was the intent but I just didn't think it was implemented that well (or can be for that matter in a franchise like DA).

Dark themes can make it more believable but also make it harder to care about the world if the people in it are bigoted pricks who the protagonist is expected to sacrifice his or her happiness for their continued happiness.

Ok only really read the OP but am I the only one who actually found DA2 to be a fair bit lighter than DA:O? Now maybe it's just that DA2 couldn't make me really care, but I never got the impression of it as dark or grim. The only time I considered the game to be "dark" was the death of Hawke's mother, other than that it was just wandering around watching a clueless rube stumble into situations he/she has no business getting into. That isn't the grounds for dark fantasy it's the grounds of a sitcom.

I think it's pretty much a given that the playable character in DA3 is going to end up with one of these two fates:

1). Dead.
2). "Mysteriously disappeared."

So yeah, it'll be as dark as that will allow.

I enjoyed how while there were dark moments in DA1 and 2, there were still heartwarming and funny moments. As long as they keep this balance, I think it would work.

DA2 had me depressed. I wondered why the heck Hawke was in Kirkwall when all this craziness was going on, especially after Leandra's death and after whatever fate befell Carver or Bethany--crazy Chantry priests, abusive templars, crazy mages, Hawke's ridiculous inactivity, etc. I didn't have that good feeling I get after I finish a game. Yeah, you left with your LI, but so what? That wasn't good enough for me. I felt like I was running away.

Having Hawke fleeing again sort of fits the character I think. The game starts with Hawke fleeing, and it ends with Hawke fleeing.

Anyway.
I didn't find DA2 to be dark at all. Actually my experience with DA2 was, that everything was handled in a light hearted manner.
Kind of like the movie Jumanji. Sure. There is sometimes something that is sad or evil and stuff like that. But it is quickly followed up with something "funny" or light hearted, to reasure you that everything is just fun and games. In DA2 it is like all my companions are trying to be "funny" sidekicks. And it feels kind of forced.
I prefer the tone Origins has.

DA:O was more manageable for me, even though it had darker themes to it, because in the end you were the deciding factor of whether it all went downhill or uphill. DA2 just left us with a mess and focused too much on the politics. While I loved DA2, it's characters did seem to become more cartoonish and the problems weren't so much harder, they simply offered no clear light as to success. It was like watching a forest burn and you only have one bucket of water. Bioware can go as grim as they want, BUT they have to make sure the end result is a clear and jubilant victory if the player makes the correct choices. I'm tired of writers trying to be "real," I just want some old fashioned victory.

So...you don't want your new hero to be all megalomaniac and kill himself to become the next archdemon and rule the world? Or become all bat****-crazy and merge all dwarves and men and elves with cheese to ensure peace forever? Or killing all the badguys plus some of your friends to end in a pile of rubble in the deep-roads (surely alive, because your gravestone in Orlais has no name written on it...yet!?)

Kidding aside, the game needs to be "dark" enough to make us care, and in the end allow us at least to lighten the world again a little...I sure as hell don't want a game like "Elric of Melnibone", with the entire world swallowed by chaos, everyone dead just so the next world can be born...I had enough of this kind of things, just done in the most unfitting way, with ME3...

This time I want it uplifting, bright. A celebration at the end like in Star Wars IV or VI (just no ewoks!) Old-fashioned, yes! An old-fashioned victory and triumph, at least as an option to all of us brainless disney-worshippers!

Sure you can. It's been done before.

But all right, I'll settle for a lack of contrived melodramatism (sorry Leandra, your death made me roll my eyes... and I actually cheer that destroyer that kills the kid in the introduction of ME3. Way to go!)

I want it to be so damn dark I need a flash light!

Some of the time.

I'd also like happy, heart-warming and romantic moments too please.

I hope it isn't that dark at all. I really hate it when I play a game on my PC and then I have to adjust the gamma so I can actually see the walls and stuff.

Dark, edgy, no appearance of happiness or joy, no chance of a satisfying event, no love that does not end up as a betrayal, no goodness that happens purely for being good. See: the world of Berserk

It should be darker than MLP and lighter than Twilight with the acoustic stylings of Justin Bieber. In short, it should be Hot Topic: The Video Game.
