@the OP - the exact problem you describe happened to me with the person I play with the most, nobody else. We tried everything, updated, logged out several times, even reinstalled the program. Eventually it fixed itself. Not before it made me incredibly pissed though. This program is the buggiest piece of crap I've come across.  It's seriously worse than Big Rigs.

I can only agree with you there.... 
Well, when my friendslist where there for about 1½ hour ago, 9 of my friends where gone.. And like you, funny enough, only the friends I play the most with...

Let's hope they are fixing this.

Try it ingame, at least I can see the profiles there...

Yeah my friend list was functional about an hour ago. It seemed to be intact and I could use chat. Only thing I can tell you is to wait it out like we did. No Origin bug or EA server f*ckup will break us apart.

Oh, you have nooo idea how close i was to actually telling him that exact same statement

Edit : Yep. That didnt work, been placed on hold while they find "an alternative" and mind you the first one was a pretty lengthy process at that.

I have that problem too, but in most cases, I can't even search for their profiles, it says servers are unavailable due to maintenance please try again later.

I have my doubt too... You know that the chat is a 3rd part company, right? It's an Indian company provided with autoanswer-sheets... If you want proper support, you gotta pick up the phone and call.. I was told by the Danish telephone support, after 5 times chat didn't fix my not delivered commendation packs.. Took the telephone support 5 mins...

Hey Sabi, Itsari (from the N7 Operatives group) had the same issue for a couple weeks. During that time, we could see him in our friends list (even though he showed as offline). So we sent him invites and he would receive them and be able to join the game we had set up. It was fixed after he got the support several times.

I suggest you :
* talk to Itsari via PM or via the group's board to know what he did
* try to ask your friends to do the same (send invites, etc...)
* post about this problem in this topic of the PC technical support forum ; looks like you're not alone and the latest Origin update broke things...

Hope that helped a bit

Spud and Sabina were right, after the lengthy first attempt at fixing it, the issue wasn't resolved and basically all you guys need to know from that 42 minutes conversation (  IKR! ) is this :

you: No, this was the only issue i had at the moment. So they are
working on a fix for this yes? Any ETA on when it'll be fixed. Just checked BSN
forums and quite a lot of folks are facing this exact same problem.

I've had problems w/ friends disappearing or origin showing them as away/invisible when they are actually in game. I've bumped into a couple of friends in random lobbies that I thought had quit- checked Origin and even though we were in a game together it showed them as Offline. Strangely enough, it did let me invite one friend to a lobby when Origin showed her as offline, but she is the only person that has worked with.  Every other time I've had to send or recieve invites  through a common friend.
I have also tried adding friends when it said there was room on my list only to be told that my friends list was full.

Nah it's just the new business plan, why test stuff for bugs, or if it even works, when you can release it and not deal with it later. Works for whole games too!

Throwing my hat in the ring here.

My profile still says I have my friends, but when I load up the friends list, it says I have an empty list and should look for friends. OR, it says my friends list can't load in offline mode, and tells me to go into online mode. So i do, then it keeps telling me Origin is experiencing difficulties or something, or my internets not connected??? WTF!! Why oh why can they sort out their ****!
