Hi all,

Started playing Baldur's Gate 2 recently.  I have no clue what gems, non-magic rings, and non-magic amulets are used for.  If any of this stuff can be used in combination to create magic items, I also have no clue where to do it at.  Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Mostly you can sell gems and jewelry without worries. (if the jewelry is magical, make sure you are not interested in that particular effect first)
There are a few things you can do with gems. In total, you can may have use for:
King's Tear (x2)
Star Sapphire (x5)
Rogue Stone (x3)
Diamond (x2)
Emerald
Ruby
Sapphire
Beljuril

People who can craft items for you can be found in the Docks, in Waukeen's Promenade and in your own personal hell.

If you are also a collector of metal underwear, you may find a deranged dwarf who turns a complete collection into a piece of armor.

If you are just beginning SoA you can relax H_T's list even a little more, since you won't need most of the stuff until The BG2 extension, Throne of Bhaal. And in ToB, there's so much loot that it's very easy to get ahold of any jewels you need (add 5 black opals to ToB list). In SoA one Rogue Stone, one Beljuril and 2 diamonds will satisfy all your special needs. Otherwise, Go For the Gold!
