However for any of you that did see it does the first half remind you of the story line in "Dances With Wolves?"

I was lucky enough to see it in 3D on a very big screen, and visually it's extraordinary. The story, while predictable and seen before, is well told and I liked both it, the characters and the world a great deal. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Oh and to answer your question: Yes, I felt that way to. But in my mind Avatar is the better movie.
I agree with everything you said... didn't give much kuddo's in my OP... but you hit the nail on the head... movie is spectacular. Afterward my wife said something that struck me... "that movie is going to change the way movies are made forever."
I think she is correct.
ps/ You lucky dog seeing it in 3D!
BTW - do you know if the ticket price is bumped a bit for the 3d version?

The whole scenario might remind some of what native Americans and other groups went through when superior forces invaded their lands. Except this movie ended on a positive note, which I was thankful for. I look forward to the next installment, economy allowing.
I especially loved the detail in the world of "Pandora". I had a strong desire to live there as I left the cinema. It was a bit depressing to leave.

Right now rather nostalgic, and shamelessly said to my wife in front of others "I see you" heh
Meh, I'd rather be an alien then human now. Heck might as well replay the Dalish elves on DA:O just for the hell of it tomorrow.

A few come to mind... Gone With The Wind, of course, Star Wars, Dances With Wolves and almost any Michael Mann movie with Last of the Mohicans absolutely superlative in the music department.
Unfortunately this is not so with Avatar. When walking out of the theatre you do not have music reverberating in your noggin, a damn shame.
Mr. Cameron should have hired somebody like Trevor Jones.

I see people complaining about the story, but to me this story is told with lots of heart, and has quite a bit of local history behind it, as anyone whose people were displaced/exploited by another people might agree with. The difference in this case is that, as far as I can tell, the tribes of Na'vi don't war with each other like, say, the 'Native Americans' did before their land was invaded.
The CG is good quality and animations are top-notch, but so many scenes are split-second that I wasn't able to fully appreciate certain things. I dislike twitch-camera-control in movies. Drop the coffee and hold the camera still, dang it! This movie would be four or five hours long if it the scenes played out at the more reasonable speeds of the 1980s, but that's fine with me.
I noticed a feature difference between the human-created avatars and the Na'vi: the Na'vi have just three fingers on each hand while the human avatars have four. Didn't pay attention to Na'vi feet too much, but noticed Jake's avatar had five toes on each foot.
I'll never get tired of seeing Ranger Rick and the Corporate Cretin getting trounced in this movie.

We watched it in 3D and I really loved it, imo the story was told very good and I really liked the Na'vi being advanced without technology.
The whole world of Pandora was detailled and that made it even more beautiful than it already was.
The only thing James Cameron should regret is that he made the movie to short. In some scenes the camera switched to quickly to another scene and I really would like to have seen more scenes of Jake Sully flying along with Neytiri on there Ikrans and the fight with the Toruk among others.
But i'm sure i'm gonna watch this movie many many more times

Great movies do not fall into the "Great" category without a musical sound track that knocks it out of the park.

Really? I love the soundtrack, listening to it right now. It is just subtle in the movie, try getting the CD, you will probably like it.

I have no idea what the process is now, but the 3D glasses really make the colors less vibrant, and darken everything just like wearing sunglasses to watch TV would. I may take it in again later on in regular 2D to verify whether that color comparison holds up. I wear regular corrective glasses, and cannot use contacts any more, although I did use them for a long time, before my allergy levels ratcheted so far upward.Endurium wrote...
I'm planning on seeing Avatar again this afternoon, since I got a surprise day off (woot!). I saw it in 2D last weekend so I'm thinking I might try 3D today. Has anyone experienced headaches or eye strain from watching in 3D? I'm traumatized from memories of the blue/red glasses of the 80s and 90s.
Even with that complication, there was no physical discomfort from the 3D for me.
Just as a few others here have pointed out, however, the movie is too short by a great deal to really showcase the world of Pandora.

That's what James Cameron does...
The best movie I have ever seen in theaters.... Usually the value of going to the theater to see a movie holds dubious or even negative value to me, Avatar is completely different. I suspect that without the 3D element I would enjoy the movie much less. The graphics and renderings look pretty corny without the 3D glasses to mute the colors and...um...add a 3rd dimension.

Between the 3D images, the explosive surround sound, the ultra cool environments and creatures, and the epic battles, this movie was the best I've seen this year. If there was ever a movie worth watching at your IMAX in 3D then this is the one. Do yourself a favor and do not wait for DVD. Go see Avatar right now.

After watching the movie I have read reviews and some have said that the story is just 'Dances with Wolves' or 'Pocahontas' in a sci-fi setting. In my opinion it resembles these stories in the sense Avatar is also about the clash between an "imperialistic western culture" and indigenous population residing in a pristine environment. Yes, we've seen the story before in the sense that it is sadly part of human history to exploit "primitive" native populations particularly when they are sitting on something that the dominant group wants.
Avatar reminded me a lot more of the movie 'Man Called Horse' and the series 'Shogun' than it did 'Dances with Wolves.'
Anyway - if you want to experience a fun movie with great visuals go watch Avatar
